The last night of fireflies
Are you the firefly queen
Lina always loved the fireflies. Every summer, they filled the meadows surrounding her village, twinkling like stars fallen to earth. For the children of Greystone, they were more than just insects; they were tiny guardians, guiding them home after long days of play. But this summer was different. Fewer fireflies appeared each evening, and the villagers whispered that the magic of Greystone was fading.
Lina, now twelve, noticed it too. The fireflies’ numbers dwindled, and the light they emitted grew weaker. She couldn’t understand why, but she felt an inexplicable sadness with every dimming light. Her grandmother, wise and full of stories, told her it was the way of things—magic was leaving the world, just as it always had.
But Lina refused to accept that. She believed in the old tales her grandmother told, of the Firefly Queen who kept the light alive in the darkest of times. Every night, Lina would sneak out to the meadow, sitting among the tall grass, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Queen and ask her to save the fireflies.
One night, when the moon was just a sliver in the sky, Lina’s patience was rewarded. As she sat quietly, a soft glow appeared in the distance. It was unlike any firefly she had ever seen—brighter, with a warm golden hue that pulsed like a heartbeat. Lina held her breath as the light drew nearer, revealing a firefly the size of her hand, its wings delicate and shimmering.
“Are you the Firefly Queen?” Lina whispered, awe-struck.
The firefly hovered before her, its glow growing brighter. In the stillness of the night, Lina heard a voice, soft and melodic, as though the light itself was speaking to her. “I am what remains of her,” the voice said. “Our time in this world is ending.”
Lina’s heart sank. “But you can’t leave. The fireflies are part of our village. They’re part of me.”
The Queen’s light dimmed slightly. “We have been here for centuries, guiding and protecting, but the world is changing. The old magic is fading, and with it, we must go. But you, Lina, have the heart of a guardian. You can carry our light, if only for a little while longer.”
Lina’s eyes filled with tears. “But how? I’m just a girl.”
The Queen fluttered closer, her warmth surrounding Lina like a comforting embrace. “You are more than you know. Hold out your hand.”
Trembling, Lina did as she was told. The Queen landed gently in her palm, her light glowing brighter than ever. “Close your eyes, and remember the fireflies,” the Queen instructed.
Lina shut her eyes, her mind filling with memories of the summer nights spent chasing the glowing insects, the joy of their light in her hands, the warmth they brought to her heart. As she did, she felt the firefly’s warmth growing stronger, spreading through her body like a flame igniting within her.
When she opened her eyes, the Queen was gone, but her hand still glowed with a soft, golden light. Lina gasped, realizing the light was coming from her. She looked around the meadow and saw the fireflies, all of them, gathering around her, their lights growing brighter in response.
Lina stood, holding her glowing hand high, and the fireflies followed, swirling around her like a living constellation. She walked through the meadow, leading them back to the village, where the light spread, filling every corner with a warm, golden glow.
The villagers awoke, marveling at the sight. They watched in silence as Lina guided the fireflies through the streets, the light restoring the magic that had been fading.
For the rest of the summer, Greystone glowed with the light of the fireflies, brighter and more beautiful than ever before. And though the fireflies eventually left, Lina knew they would always return—because now, she was their guardian, their lightkeeper.
And as long as she believed in the magic of the world, the fireflies would never truly fade away.
