The Last Garden

The Last Garden On Earth

By zulfi buxPublished about a year ago 4 min read

In the year 2142 the world had become a concrete graveyard, the vibrant greens of nature replaced by rusting metal and crumbling asphalt. The skies were perpetually gray, choked by pollution and the remnants of long-forgotten wars. Humans had adapted to this barren existence, their lives dictated by the whims of corporations that thrived on the destruction of the planet. Yet, beneath the decaying city of New Avalon, a secret pulsed with life—a garden that had survived against all odds.

Dr. Elara Finch was a biologist with a heart as wild as the creatures that had once roamed the earth. She and her team of researchers worked tirelessly, seeking remnants of life amidst the ashes of humanity’s mistakes. Their quest led them to an abandoned subway tunnel, where rumors whispered of something extraordinary hidden below.

As Elara navigated the dimly lit passage, her heart raced with anticipation. The air grew warmer, rich with an earthy scent she hadn’t inhaled in years. With a final push through a rusted gate, she stepped into the garden—a breathtaking oasis, a riot of colors bursting from the soil, wildflowers swaying in a gentle breeze that seemed almost otherworldly. It was as if she had stumbled into a dream, a memory of what the world once was.

“Can you believe this?” whispered Malik, her colleague, eyes wide with wonder.

“We have to protect it,” Elara replied, her voice a mix of awe and urgency. “If the corporations find out, they’ll strip it bare for profit.”

As if summoned by her words, the ominous hum of drones filled the air. The group had been discovered. Elara’s heart sank as she turned to see sleek, black machines hovering above the entrance, scanning for intruders. They were part of EcoCorp, a ruthless conglomerate that had long sought to control the remnants of nature for profit.

Without a second thought, Elara led her team deeper into the garden, the foliage wrapping around them like a protective embrace. They needed to devise a plan, but they weren’t alone. From the shadows, figures emerged—rebels who had long fought against corporate oppression. Their leader, a fierce woman named Kira, stepped forward, eyes alight with determination.

“Who are you?” Elara asked, cautiously assessing the group.

“We’re the ones trying to reclaim our world,” Kira said. “And we need your help.”

Together, they formed an alliance. The scientists would work to understand the garden’s ecosystem, while the rebels would guard it against EcoCorp’s encroachment. As days turned into weeks, the garden flourished under their combined care. They uncovered ancient techniques of cultivation, using what little knowledge remained from humanity’s past. Elara found solace in the garden’s rhythms, her hands deep in the soil, feeling life course through her veins.

But EcoCorp was relentless. One night, the sky lit up with the harsh glow of floodlights. Drones descended like angry hornets, and the garden's sanctuary was shattered. The rebels quickly formed a line, standing between the invaders and their precious haven.

“Get the plants to safety!” Elara shouted, adrenaline surging through her as she helped load samples into protective containers. Kira fought fiercely beside her, the two women an unstoppable force as they repelled the drones with makeshift weapons and cunning tactics.

Despite their efforts, EcoCorp was too powerful. They breached the garden, tearing through the vibrant flora with machines designed to destroy. In the chaos, Elara spotted a shimmering tree at the center—a towering relic that seemed to pulse with life. If they could protect it, maybe the garden could survive.

“Cover me!” Elara shouted as she sprinted towards the tree, the chaos around her blurring into a singular focus. She reached it just as a drone targeted her. With a desperate lunge, she pressed her palm against the bark. To her shock, a warm energy surged through her, linking her essence with the tree.

Visions flooded her mind—memories of a world teeming with life, of a time when humans lived in harmony with nature. She understood now: this garden was not just a collection of plants; it was a sanctuary, a genetic library preserving the very essence of life.

Kira fought her way to Elara, panic etched on her face. “What are you doing? We need to go!”

“I can save it!” Elara cried, the energy pulsing stronger. “This tree holds the key to reviving the earth. We can use its seeds to regenerate the land!”

Kira hesitated, torn between fear and hope. “If you believe it, then we fight together.”

With renewed determination, Kira rallied the rebels, and they formed a protective barrier around Elara and the tree. The drones continued to attack, but with every burst of energy Elara harnessed from the tree, the garden fought back. Vines sprang to life, entangling the drones, flowers releasing a cloud of spores that disabled their sensors.

Finally, with one last surge of power, Elara felt a connection resonate throughout the garden. She pressed her hands to the ground, and the earth responded. Roots erupted, entrenching themselves in the soil, forming a protective shield around the tree and her comrades.

The drones fell silent, their mechanical forms crashing to the ground as the garden pulsed with life. A moment of stillness followed, then the rebels erupted into cheers. They had defended their sanctuary, but the fight was far from over.

As dawn broke over New Avalon, the first light of day illuminated the garden. With the rebels at her side, Elara looked at the shimmering tree, its leaves glistening with hope. They had discovered not just a garden, but a legacy—a chance to rewrite the future.

“Together,” Kira said, determination burning in her eyes. “We can show the world what it means to live in balance.”

Elara nodded, a smile breaking across her face. “Let’s begin.”

And so, with the seeds of the last garden in their hands, they set forth into the world—a new dawn waiting to be written, one story at a time.
