The Last Frequency - The voice came from nothingness
Is this a warning from God?

The day the skies went silent was the day I realized how alone we really were. Until then, every scientist, myself included, had clung to the hope of contact, of discovering not just life, but voices beyond our planet. As a radio astronomer at the Sentinel Array, Earth's largest and most sensitive listening station, it was my job to detect and decode signals from the cosmos. What I eventually discovered wasn't a signal from afar but a whisper from our own future.
That morning, the static was louder than usual, a cacophonous symphony that seemed to throb with urgency. As I adjusted the frequencies, a pattern emerged, one that didn't match any celestial body or human-made satellite. It was a voice, or rather, many voices intertwined, cascading through time with a message that was neither immediate nor clear. It was fragmented, as if each piece of the conversation had been shattered and scattered across the continuum.
"Ignore the voices. Shut down the array," my supervisor, Dr. Elkins, instructed, dismissing the phenomenon as a mere glitch. His pragmatism, usually a virtue, felt like a shackle. But compliance wasn't in my nature, not when curiosity burned so fiercely.
That night, under a cloak of secrecy, I returned to the control room. The voices were still there, persistent, pleading. "Listen," they urged, "hear what lies ahead." With trembling hands, I fine-tuned the equipment, desperate to stitch together the fragmented whispers into coherence.
The voices spoke of tomorrow, of a world unrecognizable. They warned of a cascade of ecological failures, of a civilization teetering on the brink of self-destruction. It was a future forged by our own hands, a narrative of neglect and decay.
Yet, amid the dire predictions, there was a map, a blueprint of sorts, for avoiding such a fate. The voices detailed scientific breakthroughs that had yet to occur, offering solutions to energy crises, climate change, and even diseases that were currently incurable. They spoke of unified global efforts, of barriers broken not by conquest but by cooperation.
The responsibility of what I'd uncovered weighed heavily on me as the sun rose. I was a keeper of possible futures, a guardian of the crossroads in time. The ethical dilemma was immense: was it right to alter our path based on voices that may not even be real? Was it madness to ignore them?
Convincing Dr. Elkins and the others at the Array was no small feat. My initial attempts were met with skepticism and outright dismissal. But as I persisted, playing the recordings, outlining the potential technologies, attitudes shifted. The possibility of a better world, so vividly painted by the voices, was tantalizing.
We began to release the information slowly, framing it as theoretical research to avoid panic. To our amazement, the scientific community was galvanized. New energy solutions emerged, cleaner, more efficient than we had dared hope. Medical breakthroughs that we had outlined began trials, showing promise that exceeded all projections.
As the world began to change, so too did the voices. Their tone shifted from desperate to hopeful, their messages less frequent but more affirmative. "You have heard us," they whispered one last time before fading into silence.
Years have passed since the skies went silent again. The Sentinel Array still listens, but the voices from the future have not returned. Sometimes, I wonder if we heard them at all or if they were just a collective hallucination, a product of our fears and hopes.
Yet, the world has undeniably changed. We stand at what might be the dawn of a new era, one that might not have been possible without the whispers from time. Whether they were real or not, they gave us something invaluable: a glimpse of what might be and the courage to strive for it. In the end, perhaps that's all that matters.
