Nicola stared at her laptop in dismay. She had been trying for nearly three hours to log on to her laptop. She slammed her fist on the table in frustration.

"Come on, you damn thing! I know, this is my password. I have been using the same password for three years."

She decided to take a break. She was already horrified because she had split with her ex-boyfriend Jason, only two weeks ago and she still had to share a flat with him because she couldn't afford to find anywhere else to live. However; she started talking to a man named Nathan in messenger a few days ago, and they were getting on great as friends. She knew that she hadn't changed her password; yet, today, all she was getting when she tried logging in was,

'Reset your password.'

She was sick of seeing those words flashing on her laptop screen. She felt like throwing it, but it was the only thing keeping her from going crazy right now.

Nicola had agreed to sleep and live in the bedroom. There was only one bedroom, and Jason had agreed to take the living room. She couldn't stand the sight of him, so she only made an appearance when she wanted food and drink, or a shower. She didn't mind though, because her room was spacious, and she had a television in there.

Jason had become increasingly jealous since they split. He made Nicola leave notes when she was going out.

He wanted to know exactly who she was with, where they were going, and when she would be home.

Nicola had only agreed to the arrangement so she could keep the peace between them both. She was tired of his arguing with her all the time,

all because he thought she was seeing someone else! How dare he? He was dating other women, and it didn't seem fair that she wasn't allowed to date other men.

She shook her head and tried logging in with her password again. The same words flashed across the screen;

'Reset your password.'

Suddenly she had a thought.

Yesterday, when she came home from her shopping trip she found the door open in her bedroom. She knew that she had closed it before going out.

She always closed it before going out.

When she entered her room, she found her diary on her table open; her laptop wasn't in its case either, and her spare phone had been moved into the lounge. She always put her things away when she had finished using them, she liked to be organized.

Nicola heard the door to the lounge slam shut.

"I'm home Nicola. Can we talk?" Jason called from the lounge.

"What if I don't want to?" Nicola asked.

"If we're going to live together Nicola, we need to talk!" Jason told her.

Nicola decided to give the conversation a chance, though she really didn't want to. She thought that by asking Jason about the problem, he might tell her what has happened. She sighed and unwillingly walked into the lounge to face Jason.

"I bought you flowers," Jason told her, smiling.

Nicola simply said thank you and accepted them with grace; though she had no idea why he had bought them. She placed them in a vase, then turned to face Jason.

"I can't get into my laptop," she told him.

"Why not?" Jason asked.

"I was hoping that you might know!" she told him.

Jason threw his hands apart and shrugged.

"I have been trying to get into my laptop for nearly three hours, Jason. Also; when I entered my room, my belongings had been moved," Nicola told him almost in tears.

Nicola picked her phone up from the couch where it had been thrown and tried to enter her pin. She couldn't believe it when the words,

'Reset your password,' flashed across the screen.

'Did you do this?" she asked Jason angrily.

"Why would I do such a thing? Why are you acting all crazy?" Jason asked her.

"Well, come on Jason! It's not exactly new news that you have been checking up on me, is it?" Nicola threw at him.

"What the fuck do you mean?" Jason asked feeling angry.

Jason couldn't understand Nicola's anger.

He was only trying to protect her!

It had to be that stranger, Nathan's fault.

Jason had no idea whether they were dating, but he sure as hell was going to stop whatever was going on, and he didn't care about how far he had to go to stop it. He had been trying to get back with Nicola recently,

and he knew that he had no chance while Nathan was on the scene; besides Nicola barely fucking knew him, he could be a murderer for all she cared.

"I am waiting for an explanation, Jason!" Nicola suddenly piped up.

Jason remained silent.

Nicola stormed back into her room and packed her things. She was tired of this controlling power show, and she was tired of being snooped on. She had nowhere to go, but she would rather stay in a hotel than put up with this. Once her things were packed, she sat on the bed and tried to figure out what she would do. She knew Jason was working again tonight, and as usual, he wouldn't be back until late. She decided to stay in her room until he had to go to work and leave without another word. Jason kept pleading with her to talk to him from outside her door, but she ignored him. As soon as she heard the door shut, she made her move.

Nicola decided to head to Sally's house. Sally lived in Leona, which was only a bus ride away from Arington where she had been living. She wasn't sure that Sally would let her stay, but she knew that Sally was her best friend and that she would do anything to help. She hid her eyes while sitting on the bus; she didn't want to cause a commotion by letting everyone know she had been crying.

The bus driver seemed to take forever to get to Sally's. Nicola took her phone out of the bag and attempted to reset her password.

"6058? No!"

"2509? No!"

"3985? No!"

"What the fuck Jason?" she cried as she put the phone back in her bag.

The bus finally arrived in Leona. Nicola decided to walk.

There was no way she would spend $25 on a cab!

After half an hour's worth of walking, she was at Sally's door sobbing.

"Hi Nicola; come in," Sally beckoned to her.

Nicola went inside, then cried hard on Sally's shoulder. She pulled out her phone and told Sally to look.

'Reset your password.'

Those dreaded words flashed across the screen once more.

"I know it was him, Sally nobody else has been in the flat, and when I got back from shopping my bedroom was a tip; it was almost as if he had been snooping in my room, and I found my diary open."

Sally nodded.

" It has been like this for a while. He found out that Nathan was talking to me, and things have been really bad since." Nicola continued.

"It sounds like the rat has done this on purpose!" Sally told her, then continued, "How fucking dare he? He dates other women."

"I have had to leave notes, telling him where I've been, who I've been with, and what time I was going to be back," Nicola added.

"Nicola, I don't want to sound funny but you need to stay away from him. You're being controlled."

Nicola felt tears welling up in her eyes again. She already knew this! However; she had been madly in love with Jason, and she had hoped that he might change if she stayed long enough. She also knew that she had nowhere else to go, and she didn't want to burden herself on Sally.

Sally gave her a deep hug, and then told her,

"You could have come to stay with me. I'd never turn you away because you're my best friend. I'd do anything to protect you."

Nicola shook her head, then told Sally,

"I couldn't. You have enough on with work and everything."

Sally sighed. She couldn't believe that her best friend thought she would push her away in such a complicated situation. She had always hated Jason anyway.

He was a control freak, who only ever claimed to love Nicola if she behaved in the way he wanted her to!

"Nicola, you're welcome here anytime, and you can stay with me for as long as you need to. I'm not going to let you go back to that Egotastic fuckwit!" Sally reassured her.

Nicola thanked her and then asked if she could shower. She was worn out, and her thoughts were tiring.

She just wanted a shower, food, and a bed. She would deal with everything else later.

****

Nicola didn't sleep very well.

She had spent all night tossing and turning, wondering if it really was Jason who had locked her out of her phone. She had spent 7 years of her life with the arsehole, and now she was wondering why she wasted half of her life with a total idiot. She needed to collect some things from the flat today, though she was sure as hell that she wasn't going alone.

She decided Sally would go with her. Maybe, if Sally distracted him; she could conjure a plan and get her own back on him.

Sally agreed. She didn't want her best friend in a room alone, with that disgraceful man!

She would kick his arse if he tried anything.

When they got to the flat, Jason was still in bed. Sally banged on the door so loud that she caused the entire flat to vibrate. Jason answered the door ten minutes later.

"What the fuck! There was no need for that," Jason complained.

Nicola ignored him. She didn't even say hello; she went straight inside her old room and got her things. She double-checked to make sure that she hadn't forgotten anything. She saw that Jason had left his phone in the bedroom, and the sheets were a mess. She noticed a bra and a pair of knickers on the floor.

Jason had been sleeping with other women, already!

She saw that his laptop was also in the bedroom.

She had an idea!

She picked up his laptop and entered Jason's password. He was so dim that he had given her the old password a year before they split, and he hadn't changed it since.

She clicked,

'Reset your password,'

and changed it to

'womanizer.'

She did the same with his mobile phone.

Nicola then entered the lounge and handed the phone and laptop to Jason.

"Oh, thanks! I forgot they were in there," Jason told her.

The phone beeped in Jason's hands, and he attempted to unlock it. He looked at the phone in shock as he saw the words,

'Reset your password.'

He asked Nicola for it, but she told him she had no idea what it was. She then quickly left with Sally, slamming the door behind them.

Once outside and well away from Jason's flat, Nicole burst into a fit of laughter. Sally asked her what she had done, and Nicole simply replied,

"Reset his password."

Sally couldn't stop laughing. She turned to Nicola and told her that was the sweetest revenge plan that she had ever heard of. Before they set off to catch the bus; they went to a computer shop and got Nicola's phone and laptop unlocked.

Nicola chose the following password,

'Reset your password,'

She had seen it so many times, she knew she would remember it.

****

Jason turned up on Sally's door a few days later. He wanted to talk to Nicola and apologize for his behaviour towards her. He felt guilty for what he had done, and he had learned his lesson. It took him four days and cost him a fortune to unlock his phone and his laptop.

Nicola answered the door. She didn't give Jason a chance to explain himself. She slammed the door on him quicker than she opened it. She was dating Nathan tonight, and she was sure as hell not going to let him get in the way.

Jason decided it was his loss. He headed to a bar where he met the woman he had slept with a few nights back. He left his phone on the table while he bought drinks. However; when he got back, the woman had gone. He picked up his phone only to see these words flash across his screen,

'Reset your password.'
