THE INHERITANCE – part thirty-seven ………
Welcome home

Kate and her mother cooked supper together. After the hearty lunch at the pub, they decided on a simple supper of fried chicken strips and potato salad.
“Mom, I can’t imagine what I’d do without grandma’s cold room. It definitely beats having a refrigerator.”
Patti smiled as she breaded the chicken. “Seems like she really knew what she was doing. Not only is it larger but it takes up less room. There’s no large appliance to maneuver around.”
Kate set the table and said, “Mom, while we’re waiting for the oil to heat, come sit and I’ll explain the stones on your bracelet.”
“I was hoping we could get to that. I’m more than curious.”
“I used Amethyst, a natural pastel mix of lavender and purple. The Amethyst has been known to protect travelers against thieves but also helps soothe anxieties.
Next is Tiger’s Eye. It’s a mix of brown, yellow and red. While Tiger’s Eye actually doesn’t protect you from any evils, it does have a myriad of healing properties to keep you well while traveling.
I also chose Moonstone. Not only is it a pleasant mix of white, cream, and a yellowish milky sheen but it’s also a stone for luck and joy while traveling. If you’re prone to motion sickness, this can ease those symptoms. It also protects you against accidents over water.
Yellow Jasper is next and as its name suggests, it’s just a yellow stone but it’s been known to reduce stress while traveling and can also boost your confidence.
This vibrant green stone is the Malachite. For centuries, it’s been known as the Guardian of Travelers and protector against accidents. One thing to remember about Malachite is that for whatever reason, if the stone begins to crumble, it’s a sign of danger and you should be very conscience of your surroundings.
Smoky Quartz is this little light-to-dark grey-brown stone. It’s a wonderful crystal for absorbing negative energy and relieving tension. It’s also known to protect one from stressed or erratic drivers.
The Aquamarine, which is the pale blue-green crystal is to protect those who travel over water. Before you laugh, folklore says it was the treasure of mermaids.
And finally, we have the Black Tourmaline. This is the master for travelers. Its properties can protect you against negative energies that might surround you, whether on land, water or in the air. It protects you in crowded areas, inside and outdoors. This is the primary reason, I placed the bracelet on your left hand.
Folklore has it that all these energies enter your aura on the left, near your heart.”
Patti lovingly caressed each stone as Kate spoke. “You said you spelled the bracelet. Can I ask what spell you used?”
“It’s a simple spell but I thought it appropriate.
‘She is peaceful; she is strong.
God and Goddess, keep her calm.
Wrap her in your loving arms.
Protect her from every harm.
Keep her safe from what I cannot see.
So I desire it; so mote it be.’”
Patti’s eyes misted with loving tears as she hugged Kate. “Oh, Kate, that is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. And you said it just for me. Your father would be so proud.”
Kate put her head on her mother’s shoulders. “Mom, I really hope so. Now, let’s finish cooking that chicken, then after we eat, I’ll show you the designs for mo abhaile.” She kissed her mother’s cheek, stood and walked the few steps to her stove.
“Kate, I have a question. If I push on the cold room door, will it open for me or is it spelled just for you?”
“Mom, it’s fine. You won’t have any problem opening it. I only spelled it when Bridget was around. I didn’t want her finding it. While you’re there, can you also pour me glass of wine, as well?”
As they were about to eat their supper, there was a gentle knock on the door. Although Kate couldn’t explain how, she instinctively knew who it was. She opened the door to find Shevy standing there with a covered dish.
“Sorry to interrupt you, mo stor. I thought you and your mam might enjoy a home-baked apple pie.”
Kate’s smile almost reached her ears as she said, “Shevy, you’re a wonder! Come in and please don’t tell me no. I made enough chicken to feed Mo’s family and then some. If you’re expecting us to devour your pie, the least you can do is help us devour my chicken.”
Shevy laughed, “Well, if you put it that way, how can I refuse?”
“Mom,” Kate said turning towards her mother. “Shevy, this is my mom, Patti. Mom, Shevy, O’Leary and yes, Katerine is her granddaughter. “Shevy, please sit and make yourself comfortable. I’ll set another plate.”
A mischievous smile spread across Shevy’s face as she said, “So, before you ask, yes, I’m a witch but while I consult my crystal ball often, I won’t pry into anyone’s personal life, but then, again, in this town, it isn’t necessary. Word has it that you’ve moved here permanently.”
Patti laughed. “Yes, word surely gets around quickly around her and yes, I’m here to stay.”
Kate noticed that under the pie plate was a large square box. Shevy said, “Oh my achin’ bones. Getting’ old isn’t for children. Anyway, Patti,” she said as he handed the box to Kate’s mother, “as soon as I heard you were plannin’ to move here, I asked Kat, that’s my granddaughter, to find a craftsman and have this made. I found the drawing in an old box of mine that sat untouched for decades.”
When Patti opened the box, Kate heard a very audible gasp from her mother, then peered inside the box to see what Shevy had given her.
Now, it was Kate’s turn to gasp.
