Moral Stories

By Mani MozhiPublished 2 years ago 5 min read

In a splendid city adorned with grandeur and opulence, there stood a magnificent statue of the Happy Prince, a figure of unparalleled beauty and grace. His form was crafted from the finest gold, his eyes twinkled with precious sapphires, and a radiant ruby adorned the hilt of his sword. From his lofty perch high above the city, the Happy Prince gazed out upon the bustling streets below, his countenance frozen in a perpetual smile of joy and contentment.

But beneath the glittering facade of his golden exterior lay a heart that was not immune to the sorrows and suffering of the world. From his vantage point above the city, the Happy Prince beheld the poverty, misery, and despair that plagued his people, and tears of compassion welled up in his sapphire eyes.

One fateful night, as the moon cast its silver glow upon the sleeping city, a lone Swallow fluttered through the starlit sky. En route to warmer climes in distant lands, the weary traveler sought respite from his long journey and alighted upon the outstretched arm of the Happy Prince.

"Why do you weep?" chirped the Swallow, surprised to find a statue shedding tears.

"I weep for the suffering of my people," replied the Prince, his voice tinged with sorrow. "Will you be my messenger and carry my love and compassion to those in need?"

Touched by the Prince's selflessness, the Swallow readily agreed. With a sense of purpose stirring in his heart, he listened intently as the Prince outlined his plan to alleviate the suffering of his subjects.

"Take the ruby from my sword and deliver it to a poor seamstress whose child lies gravely ill," instructed the Prince, his voice filled with compassion.

With the ruby clutched tightly in his beak, the Swallow soared through the night sky, guided by the light of the stars. He descended upon the humble dwelling of the seamstress, where he gently dropped the precious gem into her trembling hands, bringing a glimmer of hope to her troubled heart.

The following night, the Prince once again called upon the Swallow to aid him in his quest to spread love and compassion throughout the city. This time, he asked that one of his sapphire eyes be delivered to a struggling playwright, whose dreams were on the verge of being extinguished by poverty and despair.

Though the Swallow's heart grew heavy at the thought of the Prince losing his sight, he knew that the gift of vision would bring light to the playwright's darkened world. And so, with a sense of determination burning within him, he embarked on his mission, guided by the unwavering spirit of friendship and love.

On the third night, the Prince made his most solemn request yet. He asked that his remaining eye be given to a match girl who had lost her matches and was afraid to return home empty-handed.

"But you will be blind," protested the Swallow, his heart heavy with sorrow at the thought of his dear friend sacrificing his sight for the sake of another.

"Do as I ask, my friend," implored the Prince, his voice filled with unwavering resolve. "For true happiness lies in selfless acts of kindness and compassion towards others."

And so, with tears streaming down his cheeks, the Swallow plucked out the Prince's final eye and carried it to the match girl, knowing that his selfless sacrifice would bring comfort to her troubled soul.

Blind and bereft of sight, the Happy Prince relied upon the Swallow to be his eyes, describing the wonders of the world below in vivid detail. As the Swallow listened intently to the Prince's tales, he grew to cherish their friendship, forged in the crucible of compassion and sacrifice.

Through the long days and nights, as the seasons turned and the city below bustled with life, the Swallow remained steadfast by the Prince's side, his unwavering loyalty a testament to the power of friendship and love.

But as the cold winds of winter swept through the city, the Swallow's strength began to wane, his wings growing heavy with fatigue. Still, he persevered, determined to fulfill his promise to the Prince, even as death beckoned from the shadows.

Finally, on a frost-kissed morning, the Swallow breathed his last breath at the feet of the Happy Prince, his fragile body succumbing to the ravages of time and toil. And in that moment, the Prince's leaden heart shattered into a thousand pieces, overcome with grief at the loss of his dearest friend.

Yet, even in death, the Swallow's sacrifice had not been in vain. For on the following day, as the townsfolk gazed upon the now dull and unremarkable statue of the Happy Prince, they marveled at the broken lead heart that refused to melt, and they searched in vain for the body of the noble Swallow.

From His celestial throne on high, God beheld the scene below with eyes of compassion and love. Summoning His angels to His side, He spoke with a voice that echoed through the heavens.

"Bring me the two most precious things in the city," He commanded, His words resounding with divine authority.

And so, the angels brought forth the leaden heart of the Happy Prince and the lifeless body of the Swallow, laying them at the feet of their Creator. And as God beheld these tokens of selfless love and sacrifice, a smile graced His lips, and His heart swelled with joy.

"In my garden of paradise, this little bird shall sing forevermore," declared God, His voice a symphony of divine grace. "And in my city of gold, the Happy Prince shall stand as a beacon of love and compassion, praising me for all eternity."

And so it was that the Happy Prince and the faithful Swallow found eternal peace and happiness in the kingdom of heaven, their selfless acts of kindness and compassion immortalized for all time.
