Green Light

By Sekou Gaidi

Angelique, the tiny brown goddess, sat behind the wheel of her black Cadillac and tapped her fingers. She was impatient with the laws of men on a good day, and as far as she was concerned, she wouldn’t go out of her way to kill any mortals. She supposed she could be decapitated as much as any other driver could, but her glass was bulletproof.

“Ciere,” Angelique said to her car, “we gonna gun it soon as the light’s green. You think you can handle that?”

“Anything for you, Mistress,” the radio said.

Angelique almost answered, but the light turned green just in time. The tiny girl pushed the gas pedal and the air rippled in front of them. She gaped…they slid through the mirage like a knife in butter…and the darkness swallowed them.

Angelique kept her eyes open, tried to brake, but the Cadillac kept on rolling.

“Damn it, Ciere, stop!”

“I have!”

Yet the world kept sliding by. Angelique sniffed the air.

The reek made her face screw, and she shouted out the window, “Whatever god is trying to fuck with me, stop it right now!”

The car stopped. The air was filled with green light, and Angelique winced as it grew unbearable…and then silence.

“I am no ordinary god, young half-breed,” came a voice redolent with arrogance and power. “I am the son of Enki, maker of the Sumerian people. Mortals of any breed are made to service my kind, even if they have the blood of Egypt’s gods.”

“Don’t get out,” the radio whispered, but Angelique smiled.

“I’m not scared of a man who can’t even reveal himself, be he god or be he mortal,” Angelique said, reaching beside her. In the back seat was a sword and it was vibrating and humming. She pulled it out, scabbard and all and then got out of the black Cadillac.

“What are you doing, little mortal creature?” the arrogant voice said. “You can’t defeat me. I have come to tell you how futile your games are. You may slay the gods of Caanan, and you may be their terror, the alleged Godslayer, but I am Annunaki. Our spells are aged beyond reckoning. You shall serve me, open a Door in the Sky to allow my soldiers to come in. No god shall be able to stand against my horde from the Underworld.”

Angelique tapped her sword’s hilt.

“No response, child of the Ferryman?” the voice snarled. “I didn’t expect it. My power is supreme. No wonder you can’t reply.”

“So is that the point?” Angelique said. “You need me to allow you to invade the Earth? Let me tell you something. Mortals feed me well. I don’t need you comin’ in and wipin’ them out. What am I supposed to feed on? Animals?”

“There will be a race of man to come, half-breed,” the voice said. “But I come to tell you that I have foreseen all. You shall serve me.”

Angelique pulled out a cigarette and lit it with her will.

“You think?” Angelique said. “I think it’s a mistake to allow the Godslayer into your space. I think you can eat me. I serve myself.”

“You…”

“Yeah,” Angelique said, drawing her sword which began to vibrate and glow green. “And Marduk you will let me and my steed go at once!”

“No! You shall not, monkey…”

“Bye,” Angelique said, and her sword flashed a more brilliant green than the ocean…

Angelique was in the car again, speeding.

“Great,” Angelique said. “I needed a space god pissed off at me like a hole in the head. I know one thing, though, I will never open this alleged Door in the Sky.”

“I know you better than that,” Ciere said through the radio in a purr. “You will get stronger and we will kick this guy in the dick.”

“We will, won’t we?” Angelique said as they sped to destiny.
