There once was a young girl who had dreams farther than the eye can see. She had beautiful curly hair as big as the tree tops and a smile that could outshine the sun. She had skin so beautiful it glistened like honey, and as brown and earthly as the beautiful soil in her gardens.

She wasn’t your ordinary girl. No not in the least. She was the granddaughter of the elder everyone knew as the “Fairy Witch” or the “Fairy Witch of the Forest”. A woman known for her healing methods and strength and resilience that resembled the Gods. Her soul was pure, she was as sweet as they come. She was tiny but powerful and that’s how she got the name the fairy witch. It was no secret she was a witch, but she resembled a fairy and that’s how she was given her name.

They lived in a beautiful cottage in the forest a ways away from the Village of Beginnings. Never has she ever stepped foot out of the forest. Not even when her grandmother visited the village herself. She learned how to cook with what nature gave her, and grew any and everything that she could possibly need. She made her own clothes, and helped her grandmother around the house. She was beyond talented and so grounded. She was happy with her life. Everything she could ever learn to survive and thrive, her grandmother taught her.

She followed in her grandmother’s footsteps proudly. In hopes that one day she could receive a name much like her grandmothers, as that’s what she is striving for.

Her name is Amethyst Queenly. Named after a beautiful crystal and also the color of her eyes.

“Grandma,” said the 11 year old Amethyst, “When will I get to become a fairy witch like you?”

With a small laugh grandma said, “My dear in my books you already are. You are already much like me. You’ve grown so fast, and beyond talented yes indeed.”

“But no one in the village has seen what I can do...Do they even know who I am, or if my powers are true?”

“We are the only two in this forest alongside our mystical friends. I’m positive they know the name Amethyst.”

Mystical creatures

She pondered the things her grandma just said, deep in thought as her thoughts began to spin. Her grandma knew things that she didn’t of course. Like how someday Amethysts powers would bloom and grow, beyond her own and will take her places beyond the unknown.

“Grandma, I wanna go out. Outside and explore. I want a cool name much like yours.I wanna find my parents and make my own way. I wanna do those things, starting today”

“My dear I would love for you to go out and explore,” grandma started, “but you are still too young and have much more to learn. Give me seven years to teach all that I know. So when the time's right, you are ready to go.”

Amethyst smiled and jumped with glee and asked her grandma if she could begin to learn everything immediately. Her dream of becoming a loving witch and adventurer was no longer far in sight. She only wants a name for herself and a new life. She wants to try new things and even become someone's wife.

The years go by and she continues to grow. All of the mystical creatures, plants, and even the stars watched Amethyst grow and glow. Her hair grew bigger, longer and wilder than the forest. Her skin continued to flourish and glimmer in the sun. Her smile never changed as she grew up. She is now 18 and ready to explore, with all of the magik her grandma taught her and more! Not just magik with wands and spells, but the magik of life and all the things the universe has withheld...from young minds and those who don’t mean well.

“My darling grandchild, the time has come but don’t ever think that my job is done. As you continue to grow, so do I and everything around you as well down below or even up high. Take this time to find yourself. Embrace the world and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Be mindful of the people around you and the energy they carry. No need to be wary, just be smart and careful. DO what you do best and continue to be helpful. I’ll be here in the Forest of Dreams for this is my home, and if you shall find one of your own I hope it is as beautiful as your soul. Don’t forget I am always here, and in your heart I am always near.”

With tears rushing down her face and a smile nonetheless, Amethyst accepted her grandma's blessing and a beautiful pendant to wear around her neck.

“Here is a necklace crafted just for you. The sun and moon combined to represent me and you. For you are my sunshine, and I’m a stickler for the moon. This is a piece of home that will hopefully be forever with you.”

“Grandma, this isn’t goodbye, just a ‘see you later’. I’m going to create a new life and another home for us so we can always take an adventure.”

With a smile, a nod, and a wave goodbye grandma sent her on her way knowing she will thrive.

“Miss O, do you think she’s ready for the world,” said Sheena the dryad.

“I think the real question is; Is the world ready for her?”

Days went by. Then weeks. Then months.

Grandma only heard from Amethyst once in a letter sent by her owl familiar. It read:

Grandma I’m sorry for the lack of contact, though I know you’ve been keeping an eye on me. I spotted a dryad I remember meeting when I was only 15. She wasn’t very sneaky but I found it funny and reassuring. I found a forest ways away from her, but not too far. It’s near the Kingdom of Pentacles. It’s just as beautiful as your forest grandma and peaceful too. There’s a cute little mushroom house and it has 6 rooms. So I guess it really is not that small, but I have room just for you! The forest took to me well, and I was welcomed with open arms. Apparently, I’m the first witch here in 60 years! I’m blessed to be loved by the forest indeed! I met a guy who reminds me of a prince. We go out and count the stars every night. And we even swim in the river together as we soak up the sun, and manifest together. He calls me a princess, and the village people have even given me a name as well! They call me the “Healing Witch” or the “The Healing Witch of the Forest”. They said the moment I walked through the village they could feel a change for the good. I plant my own herbs and other plants and give to those in need. And since I always do it with a smile, they say it is fitting. Apparently I have a smile that can even heal the sun. I’ll be home soon to visit and we can chat. But I’ve made it grandma, my dream came true. I have a special name just like you! I still haven’t met mom but my intuition is telling me I will be soon. And when I do we will be coming to visit you.

Her grandma smiled and Sheena the dryad smiled as well.

“She’s even more perspective as an adult you know. I was completely hidden from the eye,” Sheena said.

“She’s always had a good eye,” grandma laughed, “I mean her eye really is an amethyst after all.

Little did Amethyst know, she was destined for greatness. With eyes given to her and blessed by the goddesses, her eye wasn’t only the color of amethyst but it was one. Her family was blessed with the eyes that could heal your soul and see through anything they wish to see. As long as their heart was pure their eyes will never go blind to a single thing around them.

“Well anyway, those beautiful eyes of hers have taken her far. It’s about time those eyes introduce her mother...the only other woman who could see through you and lead her beyond to other beautiful things. I mean that cute mushroom house and quiet forest was left for her after all.”

Mushroom Cottage

Grandma already foretold what the future was to hold. She already knew what her granddaughter was able to achieve. She took after her mother, Rose Nightly, the woman with the Rose Quartz eyes. She was so full of love and light. Also raised by her mother the Fairy Witch, she eventually wanted to travel and see new things. Which led her straight to the Kingdom of Pentacles. She then married ,now husband, King Obsidian; Amethyst's father.

They wanted Amethyst to have a journey like her mothers and to grow up knowing her true self. So, Rose asked her mother if she could love and care for her until the time is right. Without hesitation and open arms, grandma Nightly said, “Would I be mama Opal if I said no?”

With tears in her eyes, a smile on her face, and a heavy heart Rose said, “My love this isn’t goodbye, but a see you later. For I am in your heart and in spirit. When the day has come, and you are ready to fly, spread those wings and fly high. I’ll be waiting for you in another forest on the other side.”

She left with a heavy heart, but also with a smile. Because even though it may be a while, she knew that she’d see her darling girl after a while.

Days went by and Amethyst returned with a man in tow and a mouth full of words. But they weren’t the only people who arrived back to her home. Not far behind was her parents in tow. With a new bundle of joy!

“Grandma Opal we have arrived! Come on, come look, come outside!”

Grandma Opal came outside and much to her surprise outside was her little family with joy in their eyes!

“MY babies, my babies they all have arrived. This is one thing I couldn't see with my eyes!”

“Hello mom, it's been a while. My angel finally found me so I thought it was time. We’ve been waiting for her and she found us at last, and now I can introduce you to our little gem. Another girl whom we shall give the world, but this time with the help of my little girl. In the Forest of Light where my daughter now resides, I’ll partially raise my daughter there so she can see the world through our eyes.”

“And with the help of Jasper of course. Grandma, this is the guy who stole my heart. The man of whom I wish to never be apart.”

Grandma Opal smiled with tears in her eyes and said, “It looks like my job here is done. I’ve raised you both well and now I have two sons! I’m proud of you both, you both have achieved your dreams! And now the time has come for you both to pass down the love and light to the new branches of the family tree! The world is yours and the universe is on your side. Continue to do great things with love, light, and pride!”

With smiles on their faces and hearts full of love, the Crystal family caught up and shared all the love. The forests flourished, new life was born, the universe was at peace knowing there were pure witches at work.

The most important thing that no one could ever overlook was; their magik was never giving up and spreading love to the fullest.

Follow your dreams and the path that it takes you, and do it with a smile. If you do, people will remember you for a long while. The universe has much to give. But remember to give back and grow with it too. You’ll never know what lies for you in the future unless you do!

This was as made up as it came. A story of a girl with talents and a beautifully curious brain. It used to be fun to sit down with my grandma and sister right next to me at bed time. We've read every bedtime story could think of. And we weren’t kids that were like “read that again!”. So grandma decided we’d start making our own bedtime stories. We would throw our ideas out (even with our eyes already closed) and our grandma helped put our ideas together. Our minds always wondered about things beyond the eye. We loved fairy tales and folktales. It piqued our curiosity. And our grandma enjoyed how wild our minds were. So we decided to make our own story. One different from other typical fairy tales and bedtime stories. I added a spin of course, who would I be if I didn’t.

These times were important for us. Especially now looking back and grandma can barely remember yesterday. We have stories now to cherish and remember.

Everything starts to sound the same, and growing up as a little black girl we never got to see many books about us. So why not create our own. Who is anyone to say that we can’t have our own fairy tale. Our own bedtime story that left us in high spirits (literally, ha!) that night.

Anyone can create a story of their own if they have an imagination. And what kid doesn't! I want that story and my words that follow to be something that reminds kids; Hey! You can imagine anything you want. Don’t let anyone tell you differently! Be as free as the wind.
