The Ghost Who Fell in Love with a Living Girl

A love that defied death and time

By Adrian-Razvan IspasPublished 7 months ago 3 min read

The moon hung full over the decaying silhouette of Rosewood Manor. Inside, the halls groaned with wind and memory—but Silas, the ghost of the house, moved quietly through them like breath in winter air. He had died more than a century ago, and the loneliness had long since settled into him like dust on forgotten books.

Then, one night, she came.

Lily Carver wasn’t a thrill-seeker like the others who dared the manor for fun. She was a painter—quiet, observant, drawn to decay and beauty alike. With her satchel of brushes and a lantern in hand, she entered the abandoned house to find inspiration.

Silas noticed her instantly. He had grown used to silence, but Lily hummed as she worked—softly, sweetly. Her voice stirred something long buried in him.

For a time, he watched in secret: the way she studied broken architecture, the way her fingers danced across the canvas. When her lantern went out one night and she cried out softly in the dark, Silas willed it back to life with the little power he still had. She blinked in surprise, then whispered, “Thank you.”

From that moment, she spoke to him often, even without knowing who or what he was. He answered in little ways—a brush moved, a door closed gently, a painting found upright instead of fallen.

On her fourth night, Lily sketched the grand staircase, and her pencil began to move on its own. Her hand, guided by something beyond her, drew the outline of a man: high cheekbones, tired eyes, a longing expression. She stared at the portrait. “Is… is this you?”

For the first time in decades, Silas took form. Faint, flickering like smoke, but visible. Lily gasped—but didn’t run. Instead, she reached toward him.

“You’re not here to hurt me.”

He shook his head slowly.

They began to meet each night. Lily brought stories and laughter. Silas gave her peace and wonder. They couldn’t touch—her fingers passed through his—but their hearts moved closer all the same.

One night, Lily fell on a jagged board and gashed her palm. Blood spilled fast and red. Silas hovered over her, panic flooding his cold soul. Desperately, he pressed his hand to hers.

Warmth surged. The bleeding stopped.

“You healed me,” she whispered.

That touch—brief, impossible—sparked a dream: could they ever truly be together?

Lily, ever curious, began researching. In the manor’s forgotten library, she discovered the Moonlight Codex, a dusty book of arcane lore. One spell, buried deep within, promised a way for the dead to regain mortal form—but only under the full moon, and only with love as the anchor.

“I want to try,” she told him.

Silas hesitated. “It may not work. And if it does, I may not remain.”

“I’d rather have one moment with you than a lifetime of wondering.”

Together, they stood in the shattered chapel at midnight. Moonlight streamed through stained glass as Lily recited the incantation. Silas felt his spirit unraveling—like mist caught in a storm—but he didn’t resist.

Light consumed him.

Then… silence.

Lily opened her eyes, heart pounding. “Silas?”

At first, nothing.

Then, from behind the dust-covered pews, a voice answered, hoarse but real: “Lily?”

She turned—and there he stood. Alive. Flesh and breath. No longer a ghost.

Tears welled in her eyes. “You came back.”

“I didn’t know how much I wanted life until I saw it in your eyes,” he said.

In the days that followed, they explored the world together. The wind felt different on his skin. Food, laughter, color—it overwhelmed Silas, but Lily never left his side.

They left Rosewood eventually, but the manor was no longer cursed. Where silence once ruled, laughter echoed.

Silas had died once, tied to a broken promise. But love—true love—had given him a second chance.

And Lily? She had come to paint the beauty in ruins… but ended up painting a new life with the man who found her in the dark.
