"Why the panicked phone call?" asks Bayla, as we stand on her back porch on a cold, May morning in Cleveland.
I giggle as I go over difficult family issues, though none of them are funny.
"You laugh when you are uncomfortable. But all you said is so distressing. Be sad for a moment," she offers.
My smile drops.
"Admitting that the life you are living doesn't match your values might be the hardest truth to face," says Bayla.
I take a long drag off my cigarette. As the smoke escapes me, I hear myself gasp with despair.
