Fion MacCuel (Midjourney)

One of the greatest heroes of Kilton culture is King Fionn MacCuel of Clan MacCuel for fending off the northmen of Terrador who were led by Warlord Roark of Novengraad. He and his barbaric troops landed on the northern coast of Kilt and raided down to the central plains. The clans of Kilt’s northern coast fought them off for days before falling back beyond the Forest of 'Fetch. It was the first time a raid like this had occurred in Kilt’s history and the clans and their leaders were not prepared for the battles to come.

When the news had reached young Fionn MacCuel, who had only recently become king after the death of his father, Lughan, he was unsure of himself and his standing as king. King Fionn consulted the Dahgda, Mohurst MacRomac of Greyloch, his handpicked advisor and childhood friend. They tried organizing a coordinated campaign against the northmen but this was the first raid of this kind that Kilt had ever seen on its shores. However, they recieved word that the northmen had moved down beyond the northern coast and were making their way toward Myrmidon in the south. Fionn and Mohurst knew they were running out of time and that a well thought strategy wasn't enough to stop the sheer force of the northmen and their trail of destruction. King Fionn was young and untested. The clans scattered across the green land of Kilt had very little faith in his leadership during such a trial. He knew that the only way to inspire his people and drive back the brutes of the north was to mount his horse and ride to meet them in battle himself. Mohurst was moved by his bravery and sent word out to all the clans and their chieftains to let them know that their king was riding alone to meet the raiders from Terrador.

Fionn rode his white horse for three days alone across the green fields, making haste to what would surely be his death. He was one days ride north of Springhill when he saw the hoards of Terradorian barbarians, draped in pelts and wielding crude axes. Fionn was afraid, shaking in his father's armor and wielding Mohurst's sword. He was ready to charge at Warlord Roark when he heard a horn blowing from behind him. The sound came from a warhorn blown by his dear friend, Mohurst, who was followed by a militia of horseback knights. All of the clans came together, MacRomac, Ruddy, Bright-Eyes, Padfoot, and Donnely who were all moved by Fionn's courage. Fionn led the charge with his brigade following behind him. Their horses gave them the upperhand and, now united, allowed them to make quick work of the raiders.

Fionn made his way to Roark and faced off with him in a duel. Roark was strong but Fionn fought him like a well trained swordsman and a proper knight. Fionn struck Roark in the leg with his sword, knocking him to the ground. The Kilton militia saw this and were motivated to keep driving the northmen back. One of Roark's men saw him wounded and picked him up, quickly saving him and carrying him back toward their ships. The battle was won and young Fionn was now seen as a hero who stepped up to protect his homeland and people in the face of barbarian hoards. Fionn was carried all the way back to Myrmidon by Mohurst and his allies and, to this day, is remembered as Fionn the Brave by the men and women of Kilt.

A Letter from Mohurst MacRomac the Night Before The Battle of the Green:

“My sworn brother of Clan MacCuel, dark clouds from the north have blown across our coast down to the Green Field and those Northmen have wrought blood from Longrow to Bestige. The Ruddy clan questions their young king and my bruisings can only go so far as to convince them of your rightness. I won’t listen to them call you “The Pony Prince” any longer… Warlord Roark and his men must be met by our King on the battlefield but you will not face him alone. I’ve spoken with the other clans and their chiefs, we will make the ride to the Plains of Dengraad and meet them with all the strength we can muster. Your horse will be saddled and your armor will be shined and faultless. You will also find my own sword, thirsty and whetted, already stowed on your horse. We will see you soon and I will be there to fight, or die, beside you. Your sworn brother, Mohurst.”

Hey man I really like the idea of this young man overcoming his fears to inspire his betters to acts of valour. Have you ever heard of the Battle of Montgisard? Young 16 year old leper King, Baldwin IV of Jerusalem leads a small force 300 knights and a few thousand militia footmen against Saladin 30,000 strong army and decisively crushes them, almost capturing Saladin himself. Baldwin IV is certainly one of my favourite historical characters and Fionn reminds me of him. The triumph of untested youth is always an inspiring theme.
