The Estranged Wife Part 5
Sarah Collins, a successful engineer and a divorcee never thought of seeing her ex-husband again. It probably is the worst day of her life to be in the same room with her ex-husband and have a meeting with him. The universe probably made a big joke on her when Alex Karydi was sent to handle the project and collaborate with her instead of his colleague. The tension between them escalated when Sarah's boyfriend, Andrew Kennedy, went all the way to Singapore to surprise and propose to her. The thought of his ex-wife marrying another man angered Alex even more and he did everything he could to make her suffer. Will Sarah and Alex rekindle their love despite Alex's extreme enmity for his accused cheating ex-wife?

George Harris’ POV
Sarah insisted to go with me to the site office today. She said she had some documents for Alex and David to sign. I volunteered to bring the documents and have them signed because I was worried that she wasn't ready to see Alex after the confrontation that happened on the previous day. She was unusually quiet during our breakfast this morning. I wanted to ask her about what happened yesterday but I decided to keep my mouth shut. Sarah would tell me everything if she felt the need to, I assured myself. We were both speechless halfway through the site.
“I talked to Alex yesterday. He told me why he asked for divorce 6 years ago.” Sarah whispered unhappily.
I could feel the pain in her voice. I was confused at first but then I understood the connection between her and Alex. His strong dislike for my best friend made sense to me now.
“What was his reason for leaving you?” I gently asked.
“He thought I cheated on him with my childhood friend, Nate Hampton.” She replied coldly.
“I assume you told him that it wasn’t true.”
I was completely in awe when she told me that the reason why her ex-husband left her was that he believed that she cheated on him. That’s impossible! Sarah is the most loyal person I’ve ever met. She wouldn’t be in a relationship unless she was serious about it. She never dated other men when she was dating Andrew even when they weren’t exclusive yet.
“Alex was convinced that I cheated on him. Nothing I would say to him could change his mind.” She grimaced and continued, “It wasn’t my fault that he didn’t love me enough to trust me. He really thought I cheated on him and the baby wasn’t his.”
“What baby? Do you have a child that I didn’t know about?” I uttered in surprise.
“I was pregnant when Alex left me. I lost the baby a month after our divorce.” She stated desolately.
Tears started to flow down her cheeks. I felt enraged with the fact that Alex didn't even try to find out the truth or even hear Sarah's side. I held Sarah's hand and kissed it.
“My dear Sarah, why didn’t you tell me about it?” I took my hankie out of my pocket and wiped her tears.
“Please don’t tell anyone. Pretend that you know nothing about the entire situation. I know you feel bad for me but never ever confront Alex about it. I don’t want our colleagues to gossip about me and my relationship with him. I just want to move forward.” She pleaded in agony.
“Okay, I promise.” I gave her a reassuring squeeze in her hand.
“Now stop crying, my dear. We’ll get through this together.”
“Thank you, George.” She sighed and focused her eyes on the road.
I admire this woman even more because of her courage to get her act together and stand up on her feet after a life-sucking divorce and losing her baby. She had a lot of misery at a very young age. A wonderful person like her deserves nothing but the best in life. She deserves to be loved and taken care of. I wish nothing but the best for her.
Alex Karydi’s POV
I was about to approach George as he entered the site office when I saw the silhouette of a woman going through the door after him. I ceased halfway and returned to my desk and pretended not to recognise who the woman was.
“Good morning!” George greeted happily.
“Good morning!” I replied softly.
Sarah walked towards me and placed the folder on my table. She had a black expression on her face.
“I need you to sign this.” She said inertly.
She was cold and distant. She couldn’t even look at me. Her eyes were a bit sore probably because she didn’t get any sleep, or worse, she cried all night. I felt a sharp pain in my heart with the thought of the love of my life crying all night because I was an ass. I needed an immense will power to resist my desire to hug and forgive her at that moment. I realized how much I still love her and not having her in my life was making me miserable. But I couldn’t do anything to change the situation. We already hurt each other so much and it wasn’t worth re-evaluating the possibilities of getting back together. Sarah and I were not meant to be. I took a deep breath and signed the documents that she handed me a while ago.
“Thank you.”
She walked away without looking back and came up to David to have his signature. I saw David smiled sweetly at her but she just gave him a nod. David signed the documents as soon as they were handed over to him. She thanked him and talked to George.
“I’m going to take a cab to the main office, George. I’ll see you tonight.” She uttered tenderly.
“Why don’t you take a ride with Alex? He’s going to the main office too.” David relentlessly suggested.
Finally, my best friend blew up his brain and made an agreeable proposition. She acted as if she didn’t hear anything, moved towards the door and left. I hastily made my way to the main entrance and followed her. I was frowning the entire time and I felt relieved when I saw her standing there waiting for a cab. I was panting when I came near her. She didn’t budge. She gave me a silent treatment.
“Come on; let me give you a ride to the main office.” I said sincerely.
She didn’t answer. She waved her hand in air and the cab halted in front of us. She walked towards it and opened the door. I grabbed her hand and talked to the cab driver before closing the door.
“Sorry sir; we didn’t mean to bother you. My wife and I had a fight and she didn’t want me to drive her to work.”
The driver smiled and nodded, “You two should make up already.” He waved goodbye to us and ran off.
Sarah removed her hand from my grip and started to walk away.
I followed her and said impatiently, “Until when are you going to ignore me?”
“When are you going to stop following me?” She looked back with a puckered brow.
“I’m just offering you a ride.” I replied gently.
“Isn’t it obvious that I don’t want to take a ride with you?” She hissed.
She was annoyed that I kept following her and insisting to drive her to work.
“We’re not even friends Alex, so don’t act like one.”
Her words wounded me. I felt upset and furious. I just want to blow up everything. People call me a raging bull because no one can control me when I get angry. She made it clear that she didn’t want to have me in her life; not even as a friend. I stopped following her and let her take the next cab that stopped in front of us. I just watched her as she got into the cab and disappeared.
Sarah Collins’ POV
Finally, I got to take a cab to the main office. I didn’t want to have anything to do with Alex aside from work. I had to keep our personal and professional lives separate and it would be a lot easier if I keep our interaction minimal. I wouldn’t talk to him unless my job required me to. I knew he was trying to be civil with me, but I couldn’t establish an amicable atmosphere around him. His mere presence enormously affects my judgment and behavior. I wanted to quit, but I couldn’t leave George and my responsibilities to the company just like that. I felt my phone vibrate and hurriedly picked up the call. I was very happy to see Andrew’s name on the screen.
“Hey babe, I’m glad you called.” I uttered excitedly.
“I’m sorry if it took me a while to call. I thought about everything and realized I was being a jerk. I’m so sorry for everything I said and for not sending you off. I should have been more understanding.” Andrew said sympathetically.
I could feel the guilt in his tone. “No, you’re not at fault honey. Please forgive me.”
I suddenly missed him. He was always there for me and trusted me more than my ex-husband did. Probably Andrew Kennedy was the right one for me, I thought.
“You have nothing to apologize for, my love. I missed you.” He said sweetly.
I smiled and thoughtfully replied, “I missed you too. Where are you now?”
“I’m at the hospital right now. I’m operating on Dr. Mitchell’s cancer patient.” He uttered softly. I heard “Dr. Kennedy, please proceed to OR 2, stat” in the background.
I giggled humorously and said, “Your patient is waiting for you.”
“Yes babe, sorry. I’ll call you after work. I love you. Bye.”
I smiled at the thought of him rushing to the operating room like a mad horse. Andrew is always like that. He usually gives me a call before he starts a procedure and they always page him because he loses track of time when he’s on the phone with me. I reached the office after 35 minutes and sent a text message to George to inform him that I arrived safely.
Andrew Kennedy’s POV
I decided to call Sarah after a month of being out of touch and I was so happy to hear her voice. I wanted to talk to her more but they paged me to the OR to perform the scheduled surgery on Dr. Mitchell’s cancer patient. The surgery took 3 hours and I dialed George’s number as soon as I got out of the operating room. George answered my call after 3 rings.
“Hey mate, I’m surprised you called.” George uttered elatedly.
“Have you called Sarah?”
“Yes, I did. I need your help.” I told him straightforwardly.
“What can I do for you?” He asked.
“I’m flying to Singapore next week to celebrate Christmas with Sarah and planning to surprise her on New Year's Eve.” I stated animatedly.
George sounded very excited and answered, “Sure, anything I can do to make my best friend happy.”
“Thank you, mate! I’m going to propose to her on New Year’s Eve.” I announced.
“Really?” He exclaimed and giggled like a girl who just saw her high school crush. “Oh my God, just tell me what I need to do and I’d be more than willing to give you a hand.”
“I’ll discuss the details tonight. I still have a surgery to perform in 15 minutes. Thank you so much again, mate.”
I thanked him and felt relieved that he wasn’t mad at me for hurting his best friend. I thought he would yell at me and tell me what an asshole I was. He was overprotective of Sarah. She was like a sister to him.
“Okay, call me!” He hissed.
Sarah is going to be my wife. I couldn’t help but get excited with the thought of her walking down the aisle in a white dress. I already booked a flight to Singapore and contacted some organizers to help me prepare Sarah’s dream wedding proposal.
