The Echo in the Cave

Lena the young healer

By widom chinazaPublished about a year ago 2 min read

Located atop the snow-capped Eryndel Mountains was a secret cavern called the "Cave of Echoes." According to the villagers, it was charmed and anyone who went in and cried out their problems would hear an echo that had the knowledge they were looking for. Because the voyage was perilous and the cave itself seemed to pick those it aided, few dared to test the claim.

Lena, a young healer from the village, was at a crossroads in her life. Her mentor, the village’s elder healer, had recently passed away, leaving her with the weighty responsibility of caring for the villagers. Though skilled, Lena doubted her ability to live up to her mentor’s legacy. Fear of failure gnawed at her heart, and the weight of her self-doubt grew unbearable.

She made the decision to seek the Cave of Echoes' wisdom one cold morning. Lena started the ascent with just a solid walking staff and a lamp. Her boots crunched on the frozen ground as the mountain's freezing winds blasted at her face. Lena wondered if her journey was worthwhile as the trail became more narrow and steep.

She finally arrived at the cave's entrance after hours of climbing. Its interior was gloomy, and it yawned open like the mouth of some enormous beast. Lena plucked up the courage to enter. Her footsteps resonated softly in the chilly, silent air. She inhaled deeply before saying out loud:

"How can I heal others when I feel so uncertain of myself?"

Her voice reverberated, reverberating off the walls of the cavern until there was no more sound. Nothing happened for a second. Then, as it repeated her inquiry back to her, a faint voice became louder: "Heal others when you feel uncertain of yourself..."

After pausing as though to think, the echo went on: "Begin cautiously rather than with conviction. You will discover your strength in serving others.

Lena scowled as the words baffled her. But they stayed with her as she climbed down the mountain.

A young youngster with a bad fever was brought to her hut the following day. Even though she was still doubting herself, Lena recalled the instruction from the echo. She only needed to want to help; she didn't need to be certain. She got to work calming the boy's anxious mother and brewing herbs. By nighttime, the fever subsided, much to her relief.

Lena treated additional villages as the days stretched into weeks. Every accomplishment, no matter how minor, eroded her self-confidence. She understood that even though she didn't know everything, her concern and hard work were sufficient to change things.

Lena returned to the cave some months later, this time to express gratitude. "Your words gave me strength," she said as she stood at the doorway. How can I pay you back?

Softly and wisely, the echo answered, "Pass it on."

Lena taught people that uncertainty need not stop them from taking action by sharing her story with others from that day on. She turned into a ray of hope for her community, demonstrating that showing compassion, especially in the face of uncertainty, is frequently a sign of great strength.
