"The Doubt Mirror"

Routine has always been Lena's style. She ate the same breakfast, dressed in the same clothes, and took the same route every day. Although not remarkable, her life was steady and straightforward. But lately, she had been bothered by something. Like an itch she could not reach, a faint sensation that was initially nearly undetectable had started to creep under her skin. She could not say for sure when the uneasiness started, but it started when she moved into the old, rickety flat on the outskirts of town. She was just aware that it was choking her and growing.

Lena always saw someone she did not recognize when she glanced in the mirror. Her smile was too forced, her eyes too empty, and her reflection had turned into a stranger. The woman in the glass appeared to be someone else completely, and it was as though someone was gradually taking control of her life.

Lena found herself standing in front of the mirror once more one evening following a demanding workday. The room's drab lights fluctuated, creating odd shadows. The flashing light warped her own features, making it appear foreign. Her reflection remained motionless for a moment as she extended her hand to touch the glass. The woman in the mirror then grinned, her eyes glimmering with a malicious sparkle, as though in mockery.

Lena took a step back, heart pounding, brain fumbling for reason. She tried to persuade herself that it was only stress. "I am simply worn out. Perhaps I should get some sleep."

But there was no rest. The sense of alienation further intensified the following day. She was disengaged from everything around her, as if she were wandering through a cloud. When her coworkers spoke to her, their voices sounded muffled and distant, as if they were speaking underwater. Although she nodded when others nodded and smiled when they smiled, she felt empty within, acting like a puppet and not really living.

She developed an infatuation with the mirror. Lena stood in front of it every night, looking intently into her own eyes as she tried to figure out who this other person was. The reflection seemed to be waiting for her to initiate contact. It was too real, it seemed.

One evening, Lena sat in front of the mirror with tears running down her cheeks, fatigued from the never-ending cycle of work and self-doubt. She no longer recognized herself. With wide, empty eyes that seemed to be pleading for freedom, the woman in the reflection gazed back.

"Who am I?" Lena's voice broke as she whispered.

Lena's voice did not respond, but the lady in the mirror's lips moved in time with hers.

The reflection whispered, "You are what you’ve made of yourself," in a tone that was icy and uncompromising.

With her heart thumping in her ears, Lena flinched back. She was chilled by the voice, which was both familiar and alien.

She felt the walls enclosing her and wailed, "Why are you doing this to me?" "What do you want?"

Instead of responding, the reflection grinned, a disconcerting smile that was larger than any human face should be able to display. Then it spoke once more.

"Lena, you have been avoiding yourself for a very long time. You have disregarded the aspects of yourself that have always existed. They have now arrived to assert their ownership.

Lena's thoughts were racing. The reflection was accurate. She had been suppressing her anger, frustration, and dread of failing for years. In the hope that they would vanish if she ignored them for a long enough period of time, she had kept them hidden in the back of her mind. However, they hadn't. They were now facing her, tearing at the surface, demanding acknowledgment after festering.

That is when Lena realized. The mirror was her, not something else. She was finally revealing the aspects of herself that she had suppressed. No evil force was attempting to take control of her life. Her own thoughts and unresolved feelings were taking center stage.

Lena inhaled deeply and moved forward. This time, she reached out to touch the mirror with acceptance rather than dread. The reflection remained in place. Rather, it became softer, and Lena was able to see herself clearly for the first time in weeks. Not the woman she acted like, not the idealized version of herself that she believed the world desired, but the imperfect, unsure, and resilient real her.

She muttered, "I am sorry," to herself as much as to the reflection. "I have been ignoring you for a long time."

Lena experienced a quick burst of warmth as the mirror rippled. Lena stood by herself in the silent room while her reflection smiled, this time kindly, before disappearing back into the glass.

Lena woke up to the same world the following morning, but it felt different. There was no longer any fog. She recognized herself in the mirror, no longer a stranger. She had reconciled the aspects of herself that she had suppressed. She was no longer burdened by self-doubt.

Lena had come out stronger after confronting her inner turmoil, anxieties, and insecurities. She had been hiding from the reality, but the mirror had liberated her in the process.

No longer fearing the woman's gaze, she grinned at herself in the mirror. Lena saw herself for the first time in years.

The conclusion.

What an unsettling and eerie story but with a valuable life lesson! It reminds me about the obsession we might have of ourselves and trying to be perfect.
