The Diary of Mishelle Gold
Wednesday 11th May

It was a nice visit with Jack’s father Monday/Tuesday, we just got back today, about half an hour ago. Yes, it’s true. Jack is now the next Earl and his father has asked us to move into the family home. We can still keep our new place as a holiday home, but actually live in the big estate. I saw some of the staff whilst we were there — I have a lot to learn!!! Housekeeper, maids, butler, footmen, etc, etc. The library is at our disposal, so I’m going to have a look there. There's bound to be a few books on Domestic Servants.
Jack will be taking on some new responsibilities, working in the estate and so forth. I can work with certain charities if I want to, and I do, so I’ll be looking into that. There is so much to take in that Jack and I are going to take a few days to think seriously about how we want to live, and what we want to do. Jack’s father is looking forward to meeting the children and, of course, our eldest will inherit after Jack. It’s a lot to take in.
I’m already thinking of what to do about my brokerage licence, but I’m definitely keeping the Fashion House. Jack says to not do anything yet, but to take the time to take it all in. Although our lives will change, not everything will need to change. The vast amount of wealth within the family is way over my head. Jack and I will be given our own account, with money coming into it from the estate, (and we’re not talking about a few quid here and there).
Jack’s father said for me to talk with the housekeeper, Mrs. Beecham, to get used to staff and the household budget. I only know what I’ve read in the history books and never thought I’d ever need to do this. I am quite excited, looking forward to meeting new people and being a force for good in the community, but on the other hand, I’m terrified because it’s all so new to me. Jack has a lot more confidence than me, but I suppose he would have, coming from the actual family. Once we’ve sorted ourselves out, Jack and I will tell the children and my mum. She’ll be tickled pink because she loves all that type of thing.
Getting back to reality, I managed to sell 2 houses in Florida using the virtual tours, so that’s a nice commission. I’ve been in contact with Mary, and told her that something incredibly important has come up and that I need (at least) a week or two to deal with things. She’s pretty good and didn’t even ask any questions. Jack is not going to tour any more but he doesn’t want to give up altogether, so I’m not sure what he’ll do.
The grounds are massive — think of Downton Abbey and you’re somewhere close. The house is lovely, or rather mansion, with so many best bedrooms, dining room, sitting room, etc, etc. It’s quite near to the village, which has a train station, so we’re quite near amenities, but with the line of chauffeur driven cars, we won’t need to worry too much about that.
There is even a stables with beautiful horses. Jack’s father took us on a tour, and I’d love to learn to ride. I’ve got an idea to use the stables as a kind of school for disabled riders. It’ll bring in some extra money but also give these dear disabled children a lovely day out.
I’m writing all these ideas down in a new filofax so that we can talk about them another time. The more I think about it, the more excited I get but — I have so much to learn!!!
Should I start writing in this diary every day I wonder???
It’s all so exciting diary — a new life but hopefully — useful one!
