The Car & the Helicopter

A Modern Aesop Fable

By Chris NoebelsPublished 4 years ago Updated 4 years ago 2 min read

A car watched airplanes in the sky. The car wondered aloud how flying feels. "I wish I could fly; oh how my life would be better."

A helicopter asked, "Why do you want to fly?" The helicopter suggested to "be happy with your path on the ground. You can go over mountains, even on a windy day; you can wind through the forest trails, drive through a mighty redwood tree; you can even travel under bridges, rivers, and seas using tunnels." The helicopter remarked how it had never seen the buildings from street level.

The car said, "I wish I could go with no trouble of having tires limited to on the road. I dont like to wait for other cars on the road."

The helicopter advised, "say that you want to fly because you dont want to drive, not because you wish to see the world from another perspective."

The helicopter thought for a moment and spoke again. If you do want a new perspective," the helicopter offered, "I can take you for a flight." The helicopter continued, "What would I get in return if I do take you for a long flight?"

The car agreed to give the helicopter hundreds of galleons of gasoline. So, it was agreed upon; the helicopter loaded the car onto a cable and lifted the car high into the air.

This was not a windy day, the helicopter began flying past the financial district towards the mountains. The car asked to fly over the warehouses. The car was in awe; it was flying with the airplanes and there was not a single truck in its path. The car loved that it could see the highway from above. Seeing the traffic was more fantastic than the car could have imagined. The car wished everyone knew how he felt.

While the car was flying over the a small neighborhood, the car said, I dont want to be a bird-en but please fly over the ship yard." So the helicopter did. “Oh! The fork-lifts look so tiny from up here. I bet the tug boats are jealous of me way up here!"

With this, the helicopter realized the cars motives and landed. The helicopter, feeling exhausted, promptly asked for its gasoline reward.

The car laughed and said "there is no reward." I was just kidding about the gasoline so that you would take me for a ride. The car began driving away while it said, "what a great experience."

The next day, the helicopter caught up with the car. The helicopter said, "Thanks for hanging out with me yesterday. Hey, how would you like to fly with the airplanes again?"

"Yes! Cheered the car." The helicopter attached a quick-release hook to the car and lifted the tethered car into the air. The car, while enjoying the ride thought for a moment and asked, "Why did you bring me up here again anyway; even though I lied to you?"

"Because car," said the helicopter, "you attempted to make your friends jealous at my expense. That is an experience you will never forget. Now, Im going to let you have the experience--free fall."

The helicopter dropped the car.
