The Best of Frenemies

Rivalry reignited

By AROOBA SHAIKHPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Once upon a time, in a small town, there were two best friends, Emma and Lily. They had grown up together, playing and laughing, and they shared a bond that seemed unbreakable. However, as they grew older, their relationship began to change.

Emma and Lily both had a fierce competitive streak, and as they got older, they began to compete with each other in everything. They both wanted to be the best in class, the best athlete, and the most popular girl in school. At first, their rivalry was friendly, but as they became more and more consumed by their competition, it turned into something more toxic.

They started to snipe at each other, to belittle each other's achievements and to criticize each other's choices. They would argue about anything and everything, from what they were wearing to who had the best boyfriend. It seemed like they were more interested in being the winner than being friends.

Their friends started to take sides, and their once tight-knit group began to splinter. It was as if Emma and Lily's rivalry had infected everyone around them. They no longer hung out together, and when they did, it was awkward and tense. They would try to one-up each other with stories of their accomplishments or argue over petty things.

Emma and Lily both knew that their friendship was on the brink of collapse, but they couldn't seem to stop themselves. They were too focused on winning, too obsessed with being better than each other, to see the damage they were doing to themselves and their relationship.

One day, they were both nominated for the same prestigious award, and the competition between them reached a boiling point. They spent weeks preparing their submissions, trying to outdo each other with their work. Finally, the day of the award ceremony arrived, and they both arrived at the event, dressed to the nines and ready to win.

As they sat through the ceremony, waiting for their category to be called, they both felt a sense of dread. They realized that they had lost sight of what was really important – their friendship. They had become so focused on winning that they had forgotten why they had become friends in the first place.

When their category was called, they both held their breath as the winner was announced. To their surprise, it was neither of them. Instead, the award went to a mutual friend, someone who had stayed out of their rivalry and had focused on doing their best work.

Emma and Lily looked at each other and saw the hurt and disappointment in each other's eyes. They realized then that they had been foolish, that their rivalry had cost them the most important thing in their lives – their friendship.

After the event, they sat down and talked, and for the first time in a long time, they were able to have a real conversation without arguing. They apologized to each other, acknowledging their mistakes, and promised to do better.

From that day on, they made a conscious effort to support each other, to lift each other up, and to be there for each other no matter what. They still competed, but now it was in a healthy and constructive way, pushing each other to be the best they could be, while still being supportive and loving.

Their friendship was never the same as it was when they were kids, but it was stronger in a different way. They had overcome their rivalry and had learned that sometimes, the most important thing is not winning, but the relationships we have with the people we love.
