The Art of Self-Love
Aakash’s story is a reminder to us all
In the heart of urban Mumbai, amidst the bustling streets and vibrant life, lived Aakash. A successful software engineer by day and a painter by night, Aakash had everything that seemed perfect from the outside. Yet, inside, he was constantly battling a sense of emptiness and an insatiable need for validation.
One rainy evening, while attending an art exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Aakash met Maya. She was a budding psychologist with a passion for understanding the human mind. Their initial conversation was sparked by Aakash’s painting, which captured the anguish of a caged bird yearning for freedom.
“What are you looking for?” Maya asked, intrigued by the depth of emotion in his work.
“I’m looking for an escape,” Aakash replied, his eyes reflecting a sea of unresolved pain.
Maya, sensing his turmoil, replied softly, “Okay. I cannot be anyone’s escape.”
Aakash, taken aback by her response, said, “I’m looking for someone who can see me from a different perspective.”
Maya shook her head gently, “It doesn’t work that way.”
Desperation crept into his voice, “Can you give me your love?”
Maya met his gaze with a serene smile, “Can you give yourself your love?”
Aakash, frustrated and agitated, snapped, “Can you stop this gyaan and answer my question?”
At that moment, Maya realized how deep Aakash's struggles with self-acceptance ran. She had encountered this before - men grappling with the concept of self-love, conditioned from a young age to believe that they didn’t deserve unconditional love.
Despite the rocky start, their paths continued to cross. Maya’s genuine curiosity about Aakash’s art and her empathetic nature slowly drew him in. They began to meet regularly, discussing everything from art to life’s deepest questions. Maya’s office, a small, cozy space filled with books and comforting aromas, became their sanctuary.
Over time, Aakash confided in Maya about his childhood. Growing up in a traditional household, he was taught that emotions were a sign of weakness. Love was earned, not freely given. This belief had seeped into his adult life, making him crave external validation and fear rejection.
One evening, after a particularly raw discussion, Maya handed Aakash a journal. “Write down your thoughts and feelings. Confront them. It’s a step towards self-love.”
Skeptical but willing to try, Aakash began journaling. The process was cathartic. He wrote about his fears, his dreams, and the pain of not feeling good enough. Slowly, he started seeing patterns - the self-imposed expectations, the constant need for approval, and the harsh inner critic.
Maya also introduced Aakash to mindfulness and meditation. Together, they practiced breathing exercises and visualization techniques. The city’s chaos melted away during these sessions, replaced by a sense of calm and clarity.
As months passed, Aakash noticed subtle changes within himself. He no longer sought validation from every piece of art he created. He painted for the sheer joy of it. He began to appreciate his achievements and forgive his mistakes. For the first time, he felt a sense of contentment that wasn’t tied to others’ opinions.
One rainy afternoon, reflecting the evening they first met, Aakash stood in front of a mirror and said aloud, “I love you.” It felt awkward at first, but gradually, it became a daily affirmation. He realized that loving himself wasn’t about ego; it was about acceptance and compassion.
Maya’s influence was profound, but it was Aakash’s journey of self-discovery that brought about the change. He learned that true love starts from within and that he couldn’t fully love another until he loved himself.
Their relationship blossomed into a beautiful love story, not because Maya saved him, but because she guided him to save himself. They supported each other’s growth, creating a partnership built on mutual respect and unconditional love.
In the vibrant life of Mumbai, amidst the highs and lows, Aakash and Maya found solace in each other and, most importantly, within themselves. Aakash’s art flourished, reflecting his journey of self-love and acceptance. Together, they proved that the key to a fulfilling relationship lies in first loving oneself.
And so, Aakash’s story is a reminder to us all - in a world that often teaches us to seek external validation, the most profound love we can find is the love we give ourselves.
