**Title: A Twist of Fate**

Lisa stood in front of the bathroom mirror, her heart heavy with an inexplicable sense of dread. She’d been avoiding her phone all day, ever since that odd, curt message from her girlfriend, Julia: *“We need to talk.”* The words had echoed in her mind like a relentless drumbeat, each repetition making her stomach twist a little tighter. It was a sentence she’d dreaded, one she knew could only mean one thing—an end.

With a deep breath, Lisa finally picked up her phone and opened the message thread. As she feared, there it was: *“I don’t think this is working out. I’m sorry, Lisa, but I can’t do this anymore.”* The words were clear and cold, slicing through her like a knife. Lisa’s world crumbled. Julia had been her everything—the love of her life, her best friend, her confidante. And now, it was all over.

Feeling numb, she locked her phone and put it down on the bathroom counter. She stared at her reflection, the tears welling up in her eyes threatening to spill over. The pain was suffocating, wrapping around her chest like a vice.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the bathroom door, startling Lisa out of her despair. “Just a minute!” she called out, her voice cracking.

The door creaked open anyway, and to her surprise, her longtime friend, Sam, poked his head in. “Hey, Lisa, you okay?” he asked, his tone gentle.

Lisa wiped her eyes quickly, trying to compose herself. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just... not feeling well.”

Sam stepped inside, closing the door behind him. He looked at her with concern, his brows furrowed. “I know you better than that, Lisa. What’s going on?”

She hesitated for a moment before letting out a shaky breath. “Julia broke up with me.”

Sam’s face softened. He took a step closer and pulled her into a hug. “I’m so sorry, Lisa. I know how much she meant to you.”

As she leaned into his embrace, the dam finally broke, and Lisa let the tears fall freely. She sobbed into Sam’s shoulder, the pain of losing Julia overwhelming her. Sam held her tightly, offering silent comfort as she cried.

After what felt like an eternity, Lisa pulled away, wiping her eyes again. “Thanks, Sam. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Sam smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. “You don’t have to go through this alone, Lisa. I’m here for you, no matter what.”

She nodded, grateful for his support. But just as she was about to thank him again, Sam suddenly dropped to one knee, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket. Lisa’s heart skipped a beat, her breath catching in her throat.

“Lisa,” Sam began, his voice trembling slightly, “I’ve been in love with you for as long as I can remember. I didn’t want to say anything while you were with Julia because I didn’t want to come between you two. But now... I can’t keep it to myself any longer. Will you marry me?”

Lisa stared at him, her mind reeling. It felt like the room was spinning, like she was caught in some surreal dream. Just moments ago, she’d been heartbroken, devastated by the end of her relationship with Julia. And now, here was Sam, on one knee, offering her a future she’d never imagined.

She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Her emotions were a tangled mess—grief, shock, confusion, and, somewhere deep down, a flicker of hope. Sam looked up at her with pleading eyes, waiting for her answer.

“I... I don’t know what to say,” Lisa finally managed to stammer. “This is... so unexpected.”

Sam looked nervous but determined. “I know it’s sudden, and I know you’re hurting right now. But I’ve loved you for so long, Lisa. I can’t imagine my life without you in it. I just... I needed you to know how I feel.”

Tears welled up in Lisa’s eyes again, but this time they were a mix of sorrow and something warmer, something closer to joy. She knew she wasn’t ready to make such a monumental decision, not in the midst of all the emotions swirling inside her. But she also knew that Sam’s love for her was real, and that he’d always been there for her, through thick and thin.

“Sam,” she whispered, “I care about you so much. But I need time. I need to process everything that’s happened today.”

Sam nodded, understanding. “Of course, Lisa. Take all the time you need. I’ll be here, no matter what.”

Lisa gave him a small, grateful smile. “Thank you, Sam. You have no idea how much that means to me.”

He stood up and slipped the ring back into his pocket. “We don’t have to rush anything. Just know that I’m here for you, always.”

As Sam left the bathroom, closing the door quietly behind him, Lisa sat down on the edge of the bathtub, her mind racing. The day had started with heartbreak, and it had ended with an unexpected proposal. Her life had been turned upside down in a matter of minutes, and she knew it would take time to make sense of it all.

But for now, she was content to sit with her thoughts, letting the emotions wash over her like waves on the shore. She didn’t know what the future held, but one thing was certain: her life would never be the same again.
