That book
A dismal day in December

"Oh, Jeff... I love you too... but..." There always had to be a 'but'.
It was a dismal day in December. Westow Street, Crystal Palace. Drizzle dripping on dingy pavement. Come on, man. Snap out of it. I tore my eyes away from the trickle of dirty water disappearing down a drain.
When I looked up I saw it there, in the shop window. That book. That picture.
For once, the bookstore was open. I guess I ought to buy it and give it a read. Just to cheer me up... Ha! As I stepped in, the assistant was reaching into the window. Astonished, I watched him pluck the book from behind the glass. I hadn't even asked.

It was then that I noticed her. Bright golden hair cut into a severe pageboy bob. Eyes of cornflower blue. Lips like rose petal fighting a losing battle to hide a string of pearls within. I must have stood there with my mouth open, as the lad handed the book... my book... over to her. They both looked at me at the same time.
"Are you alright sir," asked the assistant.
"I was just..."
"Oh, you like Lichtenstein too?" she said, taking the book from the assistant and holding it out to me."
I had to laugh. "Well... "
