Sona worked as a hedge fund analyst at Zwaanendael in Wilmington, Delaware. Her friend Caterina also served as a hedge fund analyst at Christina Capital. When they were not pulling down sixteen hour days at their respective firms, they bet on themselves.

“I want to make a billion dollars in a single day before Christmas,” Sona said.

“I want to challenge you. I’ll make the billion before you,” Caterina sipped fine red wine that almost matched her dark complexion. They both resembled the color of brownies.

“How do you plan to earn a billion dollars in a day? That’s unheard of in the history of trading.”

“If drug dealers can make millions in a day, I think I can manage to earn that or even more,” Sona replied.

“Let’s make it, then.”

On December twenty-third, the two women entered their prospective offices and immediately looked at the behemoth task before them. They analyzed and monitored the charts. Picture a split screen of the two women covering digital reams of data, trying to outsmart the markets. They brought their competence and leadership to the job.

Both looked cool, but on the inside, brewing storms clouded their judgment. They made mistakes. In one instance, Sona called for a certain trend to follow, it led nowhere. Caterina looked at the analysis of a shorted equity and it blew up in her face.

Neither woman panicked. They just looked at themselves and plowed forward. They found themselves at the end of the work day. They had amassed only half a billion dollars each. They met up at the Maximum Bean coffee shop.

“We can put our earnings together and provide our respective CEOs with them,” Caterina suggested.

“That’s not a bad idea, though, Cat. They are the true reason we made so much money.”
