Symbiotic: Chapter 61
A "Wood Wide Web" Story

Chapter 61
The cavern stretched vast and glittering, jagged walls alive with crystalline growths that pulsed faintly in the dark. At its center loomed the massive silhouette of the Crystal Devourer, its body like a mountain of jagged prisms, each movement grinding stone against stone.
Sara darted along the edges, spear flashing, cutting down lesser monsters that swarmed around the boss’s domain. Yet her strikes were distracted, her rhythm off. She wasn’t fighting at her sharpest. Her mind was consumed with trying, and failing, to force another subskill into existence. She shifted angles, varied speeds, experimented with timing, but nothing clicked.
Fluffy surged forward, the anchor of their advance, their coils crushing Crystal Crawlers beneath them, magma breath melting swarms into slag. Sara let Fluffy hold the center, while she probed the edges, searching for that elusive spark of mastery.
Then, in her eagerness and inattentiveness, she miscalculated. Overconfident and unfocused on the combat, Spear Dash carried her too far forward, and inside the Crystal Devourer’s reach. The sudden memory of their first encounter slammed into her: the crushing blow, the helplessness, the pain. Shame burned in her chest. 'I got complacent.'
She tried to Spear Dash back, but the skill was still on cooldown. Before she could rush to the safety of Fluffy’s anchor, the Devourer’s massive crystalline bulk rose, then slammed downward in a Crystalline Slam meant to crush her flat. Again.
Unable to escape the Slam, Sara planted her feet, shield and spear raised defensively, Commander’s voice ringing in her blood. Bolster Defense! She braced for impact, hoped her much improved defenses would let her survive the devastating blow, prayed she would survive better than last time.
And then…

… It happened.
The Devourer’s Crystalline Slam crashed down, unavoidable, and bounced harmlessly off the sudden shimmer of a System forged shield around her. Sara’s laughter rang out, wild with relief and exhilaration as she slipped, unharmed, out of the attack that had killed her in a single hit before.
Fluffy roared in fury, magma breath searing as he tore into the Devourer from the side for daring to strike at his Sara.
But Sara felt something else as well. A shift within her as a lifetime of study of the way of the spear was suddenly released into her mind and body. Her grip adjusted instinctively, her stance refined, her movements flowing smoother, sharper, more efficient. And then the tone came again.

Meanwhile, the cavern became ground zero of a Kaiju battle. The cavern shook with every titanic clash. The Crystal Devourer, towering and jagged, tried to hold its ground, but Fluffy was relentless. The adolescent Magma Greatworm slammed his tail into its crystalline bulk, shards flying as the impact echoed like thunder. For every strike the Devourer managed to land, Fluffy returned twofold. He lunged forward, biting down with molten jaws, magma spilling into the cracks of the Devourer’s body. Each blast of his breath melted through its defenses, leaving glowing wounds that refused to close.
Seeing that Fluffy had the upper hand against the Dungeon Boss, Sara knew her role. She moved like a darting shadow around the edges, her spear flashing in precise arcs. Every minion that the Devourer summoned was cut down before it could be consumed. She absorbed their energy, denying the desperate dungeon boss its chance to heal. Her movements were sharp, efficient, and merciless, every flick and stab of her spear landing with improved authority.
Together, they formed a rhythm. Fluffy dominated the center, a fortress of stone and magma, while Sara danced along the perimeter, stripping away every support the Devourer tried to call upon.
The battle was uneven, unfair, and brutally efficient. The Devourer’s massive form staggered under Fluffy’s blows, its crystalline armor cracking and splintering. It tried to mount an assault, raising its arms for another crushing slam, but Sara’s spear darted in, severing a swarm before it could be absorbed. Fluffy’s tail followed Sara’s guide, smashing the weakened limb into shards and staggering their prey.
The Devourer faltered, scrambling backward, its once terrifying aura reduced to desperation. It was on the defensive now, unable to recover, unable to mount any offence in the face of the storm of assaults.
Fluffy roared, magma surging from his throat in a final blast that struck a shattered hole in its armored carapace and engulfed the boss’s core. The cavern lit with blinding fire as the Crystal Devourer sundered, its body collapsing into heaps of broken prisms and molten slag.
Sara lowered her spear, chest heaving, eyes gleaming with triumph. She glanced at Fluffy, who coiled proudly, molten seams glowing like victory banners as they Roared in triumph over their fallen foe.
Together, they had done it. The Devourer was no more.
And Sara nodded, proudly, as the slapped Fluffy’s stone plated side. One more box checked. One more necessary requirement completed. Sara knew that, even when she was forced to leave, the Valley had its Defender. The bond between her and Fluffy had turned the impossible into inevitable.

The Dungeon Boss cavern was quiet now, save for the faint hiss of cooling magma and the crackle of shattered crystal beneath her feet. Sara knelt beside Fluffy, running her spores across his basalt plates, repairing the seams where molten energy had strained them. They rumbled contentedly, the sound like a mountain purring. She checked herself next, mending armor straps, smoothing dents, erasing bruises, ensuring both of them were in top shape before moving on.
Then she turned to the broken remains of the Crystal Devourer. Its core pulsed faintly, waiting. Sara pressed her hand against it, spores weaving into the fragments, and absorbed the Growth Energy. Power surged through her, stored deep within, and the System chimed as rewards manifested.

Sara slipped the bracelet onto her wrist, feeling the faint hum of crystal energy settle into her veins. It wasn’t a grand artifact, but every edge mattered.
She looked around the cavern. Shards of crystal littered the ground. Small and medium crystals scattered like broken glass across the battlefield. For a moment, she considered leaving them. The fight was over, and exhaustion tugged at her limbs. But then she thought of the valley. Every crystal was a resource, a future defense, a tool waiting to be shaped.
With a sigh and a smile, she bent to the task. One by one, she began gathering the shards, her spores weaving them into storage. Fluffy watched with glowing eyes, their massive coils shifting lazily.
Only once every crystal within sight had been collected and stored did Sara nod to Fluffy and guide them to the exit.
The Dungeon was complete. The Devourer defeated. And Fluffy, a Beast when they entered the Dungeon, was an absolute Monster when they left.
HER Fluffy Little Monster.
