Chapter 50

The climb out of the volcano was long and, before her System improved stats, would have been grueling. Sara’s boots scraped against jagged stone, her breath coming in steady rhythm as she ascended the winding tunnels. The heat pressed against her back like a living thing, the glow of magma fading as she rose higher toward the crater rim. Each step carried her farther from the pulsing heartbeat of the Volcano’s Control Crystal, and from Fluffy’s always full hearted laughter echoing faintly through the bond.

She paused once at a ledge, glancing back down into the fiery depths. The bond tugged at her, warm and playful, Fluffy’s thoughts bubbling faintly in her mind: “Corelings! Friends! Magma snacks! Best Day Ever!” Sara smiled despite herself, then pressed onward.

At last, she crested the lip of the crater. The world opened before her, the cool air of the Valley sweeping in, the green slopes and winding rivers a stark contrast to the volcanic glow behind her. She inhaled deeply, letting the chill soothe the heat that clung to her skin.

And then, between one breath and the next, Tas was there.

The moment Sara stepped back into range, Tas appeared at her side, moving with the urgency of someone who had been waiting, worrying. Her eyes scanned Sara quickly, checking for burns, wounds, exhaustion. “You’re back,” Tas said, voice taut with concern. “What happened in there? Give me the update.”

Sara steadied herself, brushing ash from her gloves. “Ok, bossy britches! I found something I didn’t expect. A Control Crystal buried deep in the volcano. I took Ownership of it.”

Tas blinked, stunned. “You… claimed the volcano?”

Sara nodded, her voice firm but tinged with awe. “Yes. And I bonded with a hatchling. Now a Juvenile Magma Greatworm. Their name is Fluffy. They are…”, she paused as she searched for the right adjective. “The Best!”

Tas’s brows shot up, disbelief flickering into a grin. “Fluffy?”

Sara’s lips curved faintly. “I don’t know… It just fit. I can’t explain it till you meet them. Don’t let the name fool you. They’re powerful. Still juvenile, but growing fast. I left them in the magma chamber with Corelings to play with and creatures to consume to strengthen. They’ll be safe.”

Tas exhaled, shaking her head in wonder. “A third Territory… And a… Fluffy? You never stop surprising me.”

Sara adjusted her pack, her gaze turning toward the valley below. “I need to head into the village. Once I link the volcano to my Valley and Mine Territories, we’ll have a triad of strength. Defense, resources, and now raw elemental power. IF my guess is correct, Crafters are going to love the benefits the Volcano territory brings. Especially once we can find people able to harvest in the heat of the caverns below!”

Sara sighs, coming up empty on how villagers could possibly harvest safely in the flesh-baking heat that is the volcano core tunnels. "Tas. Best start looking for how we can either find people able to harvest in the volcano, or how to make the volcano safe for harvesting. Any thoughts?"

Tas tilted her head, considering the question. “Harvesting in the volcano is going to be tricky. The heat alone will kill anyone unprepared, and the magma currents are unpredictable. Plus the denizens of volcano territories are notoriously unfriendly to visitors. We’ll need either specialists who already know how to work in extreme environments… or we’ll have to make it safer ourselves.”

She paced a few steps, ticking off ideas on her fingers as she sent System notification to Sara’s display.

Recruit Specialists: “There might be miners or smiths in the wider Contested Lands who’ve worked with Firesteel or magma forged materials before. If we can find them, they’d potentially be hirable for harvesting or would know how to train others to harvest without dying in the process.”

Protective Gear: “We could commission enchanted armor or wards that resist the heat. The Volcano’s Territory bonuses already give us fire resistance, but we’ll need more if villagers are going to survive down there. With both an Engineer and an Enchanter growing in ability, perhaps a solution lies in Crafter’s Row.”

Elemental Allies: “And don’t forget the Summon Defenders benefit. If we can bind Volcanic Elementals, they might be able to do the harvesting for us, or at least guard the workers. IF your ‘Fluffy’ doesn’t eat them all.”

Tas stopped, looking back at Sara with a faint smile. “So… either we find the right people, or we build the right protections. Personally, I’d start with the gear and wards. That way, even if we don’t find experts, our own people can learn to harvest safely. If we have to hire outsiders, we will. But if the solution can come from within the valley, then we win in both growth and access!”

Tas fell into step beside her, the tension easing from her shoulders. “Then let’s go. The villagers will want to hear this and begin banging their heads together for results. And I want to hear more about this… Fluffy.”

Sara chuckled softly, the sound carrying a mix of pride and exhaustion. “You’ll meet them soon enough, Tas. Just be ready. They’re… a lot.”

Tas’s hand closed around Sara’s wrist, the familiar surge of teleportation magic wrapping them both in a shimmer of light. In an instant, the oppressive heat of the volcano gave way to the cool stone of the Territory Control Crystal bunker beneath Haven Village. The chamber was vast, carved deep into the bedrock, its walls lined with runes that pulsed faintly in rhythm with the great crystal at its center.

The Primary Territory Control Crystal stood tall, its surface glowing with the combined resonance of the Haven Valley and the Crystal Cavern Mine. Sara felt the bond tug at her Soul, the weight of her responsibilities pressing down as Tas released her hand.

“Go on,” Tas said softly, her eyes steady. “Link it.”

Sara stepped forward, drawing the newly claimed Volcano Control Shard from her belt. The shard burned faintly in her palm, its molten veins alive with the energy of the volcano’s heart. She pressed it against the crystal’s surface.

The chamber erupted in light.

System notifications cascaded through her vision, each one resonating with the bond:

The crystal’s glow shifted, deepening into a tri colored resonance. Green for the Valley, purple for the Mine, and now molten red for the Volcano. The three territories pulsed together, harmonizing into a single network. Sara felt the surge of strength ripple outward, the Valley itself responding as if it had drawn a deep breath.

Tas’s eyes widened, awe breaking through her usual composure. “You did it. The Valley… it feels stronger already.”

The crystal pulsed again, and Sara felt Fluffy’s distant laughter echo faintly through the bond, as if the hatchling sensed the change and approved.

“Sara! Sara Sara Sara! I can hear you! I can talk to you! Even far away! This is amazing! Best day ever AGAIN! I’m not alone, you’re still here, you’re always here! Now I can tell you EVERYTHING! I played with the Corelings. And carried some to swim with the big home crystal! And I ate some Magmites. And played tag with the Ashwing Bats. They play Mean Tag. But I went back in the magma and they got bored before I did. Well… I fell asleep because IW as bored. But they went away. And then…” Fluffy’s voice just continued, a seemingly never ending commentary on ALL the amazing things that had happened…. In the last few hours.

Tas smiled, a rare warmth in her expression as she listened to the communication. “Viscount Sara Bloom. Greatworm mom. Protector of Valley, Mine, and Volcano. I think the Contested Lands just shifted a little further in our favor.”

Sara straightened, her eyes on the glowing crystal. “Then let’s make sure we’re ready for whatever comes next.”

Sara and Tas strolled side by side through Haven Village, the crisp valley air carrying the scent of fresh earth and the faint hum of the newly linked Volcano energy. Villagers bustled around them, their movements lighter, more confident now that the Territory network pulsed beneath their feet.

Tas carried a ledger tucked under her arm, her tone brisk but pleased. “Viscount. Yesterday’s TAP and SC allocations are complete. We’ve secured a Bakery to process the Lifewheat harvest from the Mill, and we’ve added second Offense and Defense Nodes to strengthen the Valley’s perimeter.”

Sara raised a brow, stomach suddenly rumbling, intrigued. “A Bakery? That’s a good use of Lifewheat. What are they producing?”

Tas smiled faintly, flipping open the ledger. “The bakers have already experimented with the grain. Lifewheat carries ambient healing energy, so the goods aren’t just food, they’re also proving quite restorative.”

Lifewheat Bakery Goods

Sunrise Loaf - A hearty bread infused with Lifewheat’s golden aura.

o Effect: A slice restores minor health over 30 minutes. (+25% regeneration).

Crystal Crust Pie - Sweet pastry layered with Lifewheat and valley fruits.

o Effect: Boosts energy recovery (+25% energy regeneration for 30 minutes).

Guardian Biscuits - Dense biscuits baked with Lifewheat and mineral salts.

o Effect: Provides a temporary defensive ward (+10% Defenses for 10 minutes).

Festival Cakes - Decorative cakes infused with Lifewheat essence.

o Effect: Restores morale and grants a minor group buff (+5% to all stats for allies nearby for 1 hour).

Sara listened, her expression softening into a smile. “Excellent. The more we can offer our residents for recovery, the safer I will feel when I have to travel. Plus, I’ve Got to try a Festival Cake!”

Tas nodded, her voice pragmatic but tinged with pride. “Exactly. The Bakery will keep morale high and bodies strong. And with the new offense and defense nodes, the Valley’s wards are now reinforced with volcanic fire. Invaders will think twice before testing us.”

Sara glanced around the village, watching children chase each other past the new Bakery, the scent of fresh loaves drifting through the air. Eagerly, she slid into line and ordered herself a full Festival Cake to share with the kids.

Sara licked the last crumbs of Festival Cake from her fingers, the Lifewheat’s golden aura still humming faintly in her veins. A broad smile spread across her face as she waved to the cluster of children darting past, their laughter ringing through the village square as they rode out the sugar high of enchanted pastries.

She turned back to Tas, eyes bright. “Ok, Tas. If there’s nothing else pressing, I think I’d like to get started on some more Alchemy.”

Tas arched a brow, her ledger tucked under one arm. “Alchemy? You’ve barely sat down since claiming the Volcano. But…” she allowed herself a small smile, “I suppose it’s too late to try to get you to start taking it slow at all.”

Sara’s grin widened. “Exactly. The Valley’s stronger now, but not strong enough. Every tool I can provide them I must. If I save One life with my efforts, it will be worth the investment!”

Tas nodded thoughtfully, already shifting into planning mode. “Very well, Viscount. I will continue administration of the Valley, and it’s newest territory. You go play with your chemistry set.”

Sara’s eyes gleamed with anticipation. “Let me know if you need me. Otherwise I’ll be pressing some Pills!”
