Symbiotic: Chapter 26
A "Wood Wide Web" Story

Chapter 26
The tavern was alive with laughter and clinking mugs. Sara sat among the villagers, a frothy ale in hand, listening to the cheers and toasts in her honor. Humans filled most of the room, but she couldn’t help admiring the variety of animalfolk scattered among them. Fox eared hunters, molefolk miners, a wolfish shepherd couple with shaggy fur and sharp grins, and others. Their presence gave the place a warmth and diversity she hadn’t expected, and for a moment she allowed herself to bask in it.
But duty called.
She set her mug down, the taste of ale lingering, and rose. “I need to claim the valley,” she said simply. “I have no idea how far ahead or behind I might be and I’d like to keep Haven Village peaceful and protected from anything within my ability to do so.”
The villagers nodded, some with curiosity, others with reverence. Herman gave her a knowing look and gestured toward the square. “The Control Shard awaits.”
Sara stepped outside into the cool night air. The old stone well stood at the center of Haven Village, worn smooth by generations. At first, she thought she would need to climb down into its depths to reach the Territory Control Crystal, but as she approached, she realized the truth. The shard was the well itself, its stone humming faintly, waiting for her touch.
She placed her hand upon the rim. The System responded instantly:
[Territory Status: Haven Valley]
Condition: Uncontested
Claimable: Yes
Please provide Authority Token to proceed.
Sara pulled the shimmering Territory Authority Token from her Inventory and set it on the well wall. The stone drank it in, sinking into the surface. A pulse of green crystal light erupted, flooding the square with brilliance, lighting up the faces of Herman and the other villagers who had circled around to watch.
[Authority Token Accepted]
[Territory Claimed: Haven Valley]
Owner: Sara Bloom, Baron
The villagers gasped as the well glowed brighter, veins of crystal spreading outward into the cobblestones. Sara felt the resonance settle into her soul, binding the valley to her authority. A wave of energy blasts out in all directions across the valley. Haven Valley was hers.
Then came the deluge.
[Territory Ownership Options Available]
• Assign trusted overseers?
• Who else should have authority to make changes?
• Who should be allowed access to Haven Valley?
• Review all resource nodes of Haven Village?
• Combine Territory: Crystal Cavern Mines with Territory: Haven Village?
• Set Defenses to Passive or Active?
• View Build, Expand, or Reinforce options?
• Configure taxation, trade routes, and challenger rewards?
• Enable automatic resource harvesting?
• Enable Territory administration Spirit
• Link to System Shop for Territory upgrades?
• Authorize requested Territory Alliance with Territory: Lifewheat Fields
The prompts cascaded across her vision, endless possibilities unfolding. Sara exhaled, steadying herself. She resisted the urge to just say Yes to everything and then run for the hills. Administrative Paperwork was never her favorite part of her job. And this looked like a Lot of paperwork!
<>
Buckling down, Sara focused on the most important options, as far as she thought.
“No. No one else gets ‘trusted’ authority status. It’s the all Sara show for now. “
“Territory boundary set to Defended. Authorized access only. No clue who defends or how, but leaving it undefended sounds… wrong.”
“Skip reviewing all resource nodes. Future Sara issue if I’ve ever seen one!”
“Combine Territories? Seems like a no brainer. Yes.”
Sara heard another System Ding, but pushed the notification to the side to continue her settings.
"Defenses Passive until I learn more. Actually… System. What is the difference between Active and Passive defenses for Haven Valley?”, Sara requests.
[System Notification: Haven Valley Defense Protocols]
Passive Defenses:
• Territory maintains a constant protective aura.
• Provides baseline shielding against hostile incursions (+10% to Physical, Mental, and Soul Defense for all authorized inhabitants).
• Repels minor threats automatically (wild beasts, low‑tier monsters, environmental hazards).
• Will Alert designated Overseer personnel of any incursions or attempted incursions.
• Minimal resource drain. Haven Valley Passive Defense cost is currently below Ambient Territory Energy levels. Current Cost for Passive Defenses -0.01 Territorial Authority Point, (TAP), per hour. System Credits can be used in place of TAP at the rate of 500 System Credits per TAP. (Costs will increase or decreases based on amount and quality of additional defenses added and level of Ambient Territory Energy.)
Active Defenses:
• Territory projects a full defensive barrier when hostile forces are detected.
• Amplifies protection (+20% to Physical, Mental, and Soul Defense for all authorized inhabitants).
• Amplifies attacks (+20% to attacks along wall or other designated defensive structures for all assigned defending personnel).
• Actively engages system built deterrent protocols (defensive towers, wall defenses, power suppression, shield dome, etc.).
• Alerts authorized Overseers and assigned defensive personnel immediately upon activation.
• May be manually toggled or automatically triggered by System threat assessment if authorized.
• Higher resource drain; consumes Territorial Energy while active. Haven Valley Active Defense cost is currently above Ambient Territory Energy levels. Current Cost for Active Defenses 1 Territorial Authority Point, (TAP), per hour. System Credits can be used in place of TAP at the rate of 500 System Credits per TAP. (Costs will increase or decreases based on amount and quality of additional defenses added and level of Ambient Territory Energy.)
Note: Switching between Passive and Active states can be done at the Control Shard interface. Active defenses are recommended during raids, dungeon challenges, or large‑scale threats. Passive defenses are recommended for daily operations and resource conservation.
“Ooookay. That’s a lot to process. So running on Passive defenses I appear to be gaining 0.01 TAP per hour? So around 2 a day. That’s not a lot. But it’s better than losing 1 TAP an hour for Active defenses. Let’s hope I don’t have to do that anytime soon. Which brings a number of questions. Firstly. System. How many Territory Access Points do I have?”
[Territory Authority Points: Sara Bloom TAP: 40]
Baron Rank Awarded: 10 TAP
Viscount Rank Awarded: 20 TAP
Ownership: Haven Valley: 5 TAP
Haven Valley Resource Nodes currently providing 0 TAP/hour.
Ownership: Crystal Cavern Mines: 5 TAP.
Crystal Cavern Mines Resource Nodes currently providing 0 TAP/hour.
“Ok. So 40 TAP. Not quite enough for two days of Active Defenses then. Ouch. Hopefully that’s more than is needed to start with. But Future Sara... See what you can do about increasing our TAP growth!”, Sara said aloud, but then remembered two things.
One was that she still had a couple items sitting in her Inventory that she was probably supposed to do something with here. She drew the Tidal Core Shard and Devourer’s Core Shard from her Pocket Storage even as her face burned red as she remembered the 2nd thing… She had an audience standing around watching her talk to herself.
<>
Sara blushed and coughed, trying to cover her embarrassment. “Great. I look like a trained monkey performing tricks in the middle of town.” She shifted her shoulders, wishing she could be anywhere but on display.
Her eyes narrowed at the glowing shard. “Shouldn’t this thing be somewhere safer? Sitting out here in the open feels wrong. What if someone attacks it, or tries to steal it?”, she muttered.
She raised her hand, speaking aloud. “System. Is there a way to move the Control Crystal somewhere safer?”
The response came instantly:
[System Notification]
Uncontested Unclaimed Control Crystals must remain available for challenge.
Haven Valley Control Crystal Status: Owned: Baron Sara Bloom.
Would you like to move Control Crystal to defended position? Y/N
Sara grinned. “Yes. Absolutely. Take us to the Batcave… or the defended location.” She paused, muttering under her breath, “But Batcave would be cooler…”
The well flared with green light. The stone shimmered, and the crystal sank downward, vanishing into the depths. A rumble echoed beneath the town square as hidden mechanisms awakened.
The ground trembled, then stilled. A new notification appeared:
[Control Crystal Relocated]
Location: Haven Valley Bunker (Below Town Well)
Status: Defended Position Established
Access: Restricted to Authorized Personnel
Defenses: Active Shielding Enabled
Travel to Control Crystal? Y/N
Sara exhaled, relief washing over her. The crystal was no longer exposed, no longer vulnerable. It was hidden in a fortified chamber beneath the well, protected by layers of shielding. Out of reach to anyone she didn’t want to reach it.
She brushed her hands together, turning to the curious townsfolk and waved as she responded “Yes”, and disappeared.
<>
The Control Crystal pulsed, and Sara’s world folded inward.
A shimmer of green light enveloped her, spores resonating in harmony with the crystal’s hum. For a heartbeat, she felt weightless. Suspended in a tunnel of crystalline veins that stretched endlessly in every direction. Then, with a sudden lurch, she was pulled downward, through stone and silence, until her boots touched solid ground again.
She stood in the bunker beneath Haven Valley.
The chamber was solid, carved smooth from bedrock, its walls lined with crystalline conduits that pulsed faintly with System energy. The Control Crystal itself sat at the center, embedded into a pedestal of black stone, its glow steady and protective. Veins of green light ran outward from the pedestal into the walls, feeding into layered barriers that shimmered faintly, defenses woven into the very structure of the bunker.
It was quiet here, insulated from the bustle of the town above. The air smelled faintly of mineral dust and ozone, and Sara felt the weight of authority settle heavier on her shoulders. This was no public square; this was the heart of her Territory.
She reached into her Inventory and withdrew the Tidal Core Shard, a jagged fragment that shimmered with deep blue light, veins pulsing like waves. It hummed in her hand, resonating with the faint roar of rivers and currents.
“Let’s see what you can do,” she murmured, stepping forward.
She pressed the shard against the Control Crystal. The two resonated instantly, light flaring as the shard sank into the larger crystal. The bunker filled with a rush of sound—like water surging through unseen channels. Blue veins spread outward from the pedestal, intertwining with the green, until the walls pulsed with a rhythm like tides.
The System chimed:
[Tidal Core Shard Installed]
Territory: Haven Valley
Linked Territory: Crystal Cavern Mines
Effects:
• Resource Growth Rate increased by 25%
• Passive Aura: Flow Resonance reduces resource depletion rate by 20%.
• Environmental Effect: All water resources within linked Territories gains Life and Healing Properties when consumed or used as resource for Crafting.
• Active Defense Bonus. When Linked Territories have Active Defenses running, Tidal Core Shard reduces hostile creatures speed and attacks as the air within the Territory thickens like water around hostile forces.
Note: Linked Territories share growth bonuses of Installed Shards.
Sara’s eyes widened as she watched the changes ripple outward. The conduits glowed brighter, and she felt the resonance in the air. She could actually Feel her Territory growing stronger around her, an endless cycle of growth and renewal. The shard’s influence wasn’t limited to Haven Valley; she could sense its reach extending into the Crystal Cavern Mines, amplifying their crystal yield and empowering the valley’s very water.
She smiled, admiration softening her features. “So this is what linking Territories can do. Growth feeding growth. Strength feeding strength.”
The bunker hummed with new life, the Territory Control Crystal now a fusion of green and blue light. Haven Valley and the Crystal Cavern Mines were no longer separate, they were part of a greater whole, bound together by her authority as Haven Valley should be.
<>
She reached into her Inventory again, fingers brushing against the jagged shard she had claimed from the Crystal Devourer. The Devourer Core Shard pulsed faintly, veins of light shifting like living thought, its surface glittering with fractured crystal plates, as it hummed in a discordant, almost painful tone. It was beautiful in its own way. Terrifying, but mesmerizing.
Sara stepped forward, holding the shard out. “Alright. Let’s see what you add to the mix.”
She pressed the shard against the Control Crystal.
The reaction was immediate. The bunker filled with a deep, resonant hum, like the roar of the Devourer itself echoing through stone. The shard sank into the crystal, veins of jagged white and violet light spreading outward, weaving into the existing green and blue. The Control Crystal flared, its glow now a tapestry of colors—forest green, tidal blue, and crystalline violet.
The System chimed:
[Devourer Core Shard Installed]
Territory: Haven Valley
Linked Territory: Crystal Cavern Mines
Effects:
• Passive Shield: Allies gain +25% Mental Defense within Territory.
• Active Barrier: When triggered, Territory-wide shield increases Mental Defense by +50%.
• Insect Repellant Aura: Reduces swarm aggression and prevents minor infestations.
• Resource Growth: +20% to crystal and other mining yields within linked Territories.
• Synergy Bonus: Linked Territories share defensive and growth enhancements.
“Hmm... And other mining yields within the Valley? Are you trying to tell me something, Crystal? Are there other deposits out there? Ore? Gold? Gems?”, she wondered aloud.
Sara’s eyes widened as she watched the changes ripple outward. The conduits in the walls pulsed brighter, the flow of energy stronger, steadier. She could feel it in the very air. The outflow of growth increasing yet again, her Territories feeding into one another, amplifying each other’s strength.
She stepped back, admiring the beauty of the Control Crystal now. It was no longer a simple shard of green light. It was a living beacon, veins of color weaving together in harmony. Green for Sara and Haven Valley, blue for the river’s tide, violet for the Devourer’s resonance.
