The first rays of sunlight peeked over the horizon as a swallow awoke in its nest. Rubbing its tiny eyes with its wings, it let out a soft chirp, ready to start the new day. All around it, the other swallows in the nest were beginning to stir as well. It was time for their morning flight.
Pushing itself up onto its feet, the swallow stretched its wings wide, feeling the muscles wake up after a long night's rest. One by one, the other birds in the nest followed suit. Once they were all alert, the swallow led the way out of the nest, a bundle of twigs and mud stuck high in the eaves of a barn. Carefully, it hopped down the side of the barn wall until it reached the edge. From there it was a short leap to freedom.
With a few powerful flaps, the swallow caught the morning thermals and rose up into the pink sky. It let out a joyful tweet, feeling the wind rush through its feathers. Below, the rest of its flock emerged from the nest and took to the skies one by one to join it. As the sun rose higher, it bathed the swallows in a warm glow.
For the next half hour, the swallows played and practiced in the air currents. They looped and dove, chasing each other in spirals as they tested their agility. A game of tag ensued, with birds nipping at each other's tails as they zipped through the sky. The swallow leading the flock showed the younger birds how to catch the best updrafts to gain altitude without expending too much energy.
All the while, the swallow kept a watchful eye out for predators. Its keen eyes scanned the ground for hungry hawks or eagles that may be looking for an easy morning meal. It also observed the skies, making sure no larger birds tried to muscle in on their airspace. As the protector of the flock, it was the swallow's job to keep the others safe during their play.
Once the birds had their fill of fun, it was time for the real work of the day to begin. With another tweet, the swallow signaled that the morning flight was over and it was time to seek their breakfast. As one, the flock swooped low over the surrounding fields, scanning for any insects that may have emerged after the night.
It didn't take long before one of the swallows spotted a cloud of flies buzzing over a pile of cow dung. With expert precision, the birds darted in and snatched the insects out of the air, gobbling them down hungrily. More flies were discovered hovering near a muddy stream, and the flock moved as a single unit to feast on the protein-rich morsels.
By the time the sun stood high in the sky, the swallows' bellies were full from their bountiful morning meal. With their duties done for now, the flock rose once more on the thermals. But this time, instead of playing, the swallow led them back to the nesting barn for a well-earned rest. As it settled into its nest among its flock, the swallow was content, ready to sleep the day away and do it all again tomorrow at dawn.
