She desperately wanted to help this young woman. What could be worse than the inability to conceive and birth your own child? Kate knew not this experience as she had birthed two children years ago, with a man she thought loved her. That relationship became stale quickly, during her second pregnancy.

In a time when society demanded marriage before family, Kate had ignored societal rules but, had not intended to fall pregnant, either. By the time she fell pregnant a second time, the man of her dreams fled. He had no intention of marrying her. Their first child had been left with Kate’s mother for rearing under the guise she was adopted.

Kate was beside herself when he left and did what any distressed, single mother would do: she adopted the child out, then punished herself for the abandonment.

After many discussions, interviews, and tests, Kate became the surrogate for this young woman and her husband. She desperately hoped to bring all her dreams to life.

The pregnancy went well and the birth day finally came. Kate was prepped and the baby’s parents were feeling mixed emotions of anxiety and joy.

Kate was transported back to memories of her second birth during her labor. In heightened emotion, she looked at the young woman she was so fond of, about to become a mother, and knew all her dreams were finally coming true: having her daughter back and her granddaughter inside her.
