Riley knew what it took.
As the cave grew narrower, she could feel herself getting closer to something primordial. The corridor started to soften, ever so slightly. It grabbed at her. Something in the air reminded her of deep slumber and the center of Earth.
She knew what it took.

Caves have an odd smell: mineral, fungal, traces of the feces of bats and the slow rot of silent, blind fish in dark, subterranean pools. I have heard the young men of the village mock each other by sniffing an exhalation and declaring: "Cave breath!" as though it were a mortal insult, some potent hex. I know what they mean, now. Imagine that the petrichor, the rich and pungent cologne that rain dapples soil with, became concentrated, corrupted, and was breathed into the mouth of someone who will never, fully exhale.

The purple intrigues me, but I like how it's deliberately left unexplored...the constraints of a micro! And the awareness not to give it all away.

Intriguing! The Magnus Archives did an episode on caving that made me terrified to go underground and I feel like this could lead into something like that :)
