Subject Nine

a helping hand (Epic Beginnings Challenge)

By Savannah K. WilsonPublished about a year ago 1 min read

The last thing I remember was a van pulling up near the ally that I and some others called home. They opened their doors and offered out cups of hot soup and bread, along with hot drinks. Very welcomed on that cold night, but it all got fuzzy after drinking the coffee …

Everything since has been through the blur of this liquid filled tank. My mouth is covered by a mask giving me air, tubes running all around and needles sticking into all parts of me.

A constant burning on my skin, daily surges of pain as the needles withdraw fluids and replace them … I don’t even know what they’re putting into me …

Time lost all meaning to me, my past became nothing but images of someone else’s life, I forgot myself. I became what they called me …

They took me out of the tank today, laid me on a table.

‘Good morning, Subject Nine,’ said the scrawny man in a white coat. ‘Are you ready to become something more?’

‘Please … don’t do this.’

He opened a small canister of purple ooze, filled a large syringe with it, and injected it into my back.

The screams made my ears bleed, they were shocking, why don’t they stop screaming! I soon realised it was me … the pain was excruciating, my back convulsed violently, audible breaking and bending of bones into a new shape.

One final agonising scream! My back felt it would rip open … a rage took over.

I found myself somehow flying high above the city, holding the scrawny man in my hands.

‘Please … don’t do this,’ he said.

As the wings that spread from my back flapped, keeping me in the air … I released my grip.

'Subject Nine, no more.'

This is so awesome and creative Savannah! I love Splice!

  • Is he the scrawny man from Splice? Loved your story!

  • For anyone seeking a hint on the connection to my other EBC entries: this one links strongly back to 'Splice' and things discussed in that story. 🩷 Hope you enjoy.
