Stopping the massacre

What she saw from the window

By Kristen KnutsonPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 1 min read

Kara wailed in anguish as she pressed her forehead to her upstairs bedroom window, watching the slaughter outside while covering her ears to block out the popping from the gun. "He's killing them! You have to stop him now!"

"Honey it's okay, stop getting yourself so worked up," her mom murmered, rubbing Kara's back.

Pop! Pop!

Kara howled again, then heard her dad sigh, his footsteps going downstairs. Sniffling behind the glass, she watched in awe as he spoke calmly to the neighbor boy, who put down the bb gun and slowly gathered his stuffed animals to take back inside.

The story drew me in immediately, and the narrator has a unique and genuine voice. Poignant story.
