The sun rose, and so did every other diurnal creature that graced Mount Hemptous. They sang their morning song, announcing the new day and their gratitude.

Mabe yawned and silently cursed the overjoyed creatures for waking her.

There was nothing special about this day for them to be so cheerful. In fact, she wanted to forget that she joined the trial women chose to go through to prove they could survive without a husband. It was this or acquiesce to a loveless marriage.

One more day, she thought. Nevertheless, her stomach pains signaled that she might not last much longer.
