Starlight

When I picked up that ring on the beach that day I had no idea just how much my life would change. It sat on my dressing table for a week and after no one responded to the lost and found ad I forgot about it. I was heading out to the vigil for the shopping mall victims, and I saw the ring sitting there. What the heck, I guess it’s mine now? I slipped it on my finger. It was way too big, but before I could remove it … the ring resized all on its own, fitting perfectly to my finger.

I felt a sudden surge of energy run through me, the room flashed pink, the same shade as the stone on the ring. I screamed when I saw standing before me a tall, muscular but shapely woman in a pink suit of armour. It seemed to be alive yet mechanical at the same time, shifting and moving as she screamed back at me.

Wait … that’s … me!?

I was looking in the hallway mirror, that woman was me and I looked like a space ranger from a kids show! Something on the suit started beeping wildly. Before I could check what it was I was propelled into the air, through my roof, and into the sky, soaring higher and higher … Soon the dusk of earth’s sky faded and gave way to a blanket of stars and a vision of the cosmos few ever got to see with their own eyes.

“Sector Alpha-5 requesting help, all available Knights auto-responding.”

The voice came from within the helmet.

“STARLIGHT user unknown, please identify …”

‘Um … Kaylee Jones,’ I answered timidly.

“Greetings KAY-LEE JONES. Mission Arrival, ten Earth minutes.”

"STARLIGHT training program, initiated."

‘Oh, let’s go!’ I smiled.
