Dr. Moriel Zelikowski, who studies the science of fear and aggression, found that isolating mice for two weeks led to increased aggression and changes in brain function. The molecule Tac2, which triggers stress response, was elevated in numerous regions across the brain, leading to abnormal behaviors like irrational fears and violent behavior.

However, some experts argue that isolation can also have positive effects. Jack Stuster, an anthropologist who worked with NASA, found that astronauts who spent time in space often reported positive changes in their lives. Despite the challenges of isolation, they were resilient and adapted well to space and then back to life at home.

Mike Finke, one of NASA's most veteran space fliers, noted that reintegrating into normal life was challenging, but essential. He emphasized the importance of exercise, diet, and sleep in recovering from the effects of isolation.

Researchers like Zelikowski are exploring possible drug treatments to protect the brain from isolation-induced damage. Meanwhile, experts recommend framing isolation as an opportunity for growth and self-reflection. By reframing our perspective, we can reduce the negative effects of isolation and emerge stronger and more resilient.
