SHE FOLLOWED ME HOME – ch 7

Mo deas

“As I was saying, The day began lovely enough. It was a warm and sunny spring day in the middle of April when I decided to walk into town. Summer Soltice was around the corner and Wicklow had already planned their annual celebration. I was sixteen and decided I wanted to make a new dress to wear. After all, I was all about to impress Ruari.”

Although the sun was shining brightly, Mia looked at her dad’s aunt and said, “Auntie, it’s going to rain. Let’s go inside our new home and mom can make us all tea.”

Finola smiled as she looked at her nephew. “Brian, she’s so much like me. Yes, let’s go inside.”

As they walked through the doorway, they heard the unmistakable loud clap of thunder.

After Finola told her story about meeting and finally marrying Ruari, Brian asked, “Aunt Finola, you said you’re an elf, but Uncle Ruari was a witch. I didn’t know elves and witches could intermarry.”

“Oh, sweetie, they can and very often do. Our abilities are similar but not identical. The ironic part of intermarriages is that the offspring, while inheriting abilities from both parents, usually only exhibit the strongest ability from the most dominantly abled parent. Simply put, Morena is the Elf, you demonstrate abilities of a witch. Mia will have both abilities, but from what I’ve seen, so far, she’s more Elf. Of course, as she grows, she could develop stronger Wiccan abilities. Time will tell. Your strong suit is your intuition, while Morena’s is to fly. You can also levitate and move about but not sprout wings. Morena can sprout wings but can’t do any spells. As I said, Mia, will have both abilities.”

Brian looked at his daughter, then at his aunt. “Oh, lord help us!”

Finola laughed but said, “Brian, she’s an old soul. She’ll know things that will totally surprise you. Okay, then that’s enough for today. I’m going to leave you now. Get settled into your new homes.”

As she was walking out of Brian’s house, she turned and said, “Ian, on the kitchen table in your house, you’ll find the name of a good builder who can help you get started on that animal hospital you want. Liz? There’s a shop in town who specializes in spices and herbs. You might want to check it out. Brian? There are two landscaping companies on the other side of town. Visit them. As they’re usually overworked and don’t do the kind of landscaping you do, they’ll be more than pleased to help you get started. Morena? The nearest hospital is in the next town but we have a clinic that is in dire need of a good nurse. School won’t resume for another three weeks but you might want to get the children registered before then. The schools are right off Wicklow Square. Okay, then. I’m about to save my stew before it burns itself to death. We’ll talk again.”

With that, she left the house, levitated herself, and flew home.

Mia, hugged her pet and said, “Oh mo deas, wasn’t that awesome? I already love her, don’t you?” Mo deas stretched her neck to nuzzle her head against Mia’s chin. “Oh, Mo deas, I know we’re really going to be so happy here.”

A few seconds later, the sky lit with a horrific bolt of lightning. Three seconds later, a huge rumble all but shook the house, startling everyone inside.

Morena remarked, “Brian, it’s going to take quite a while before I’ll be used to our daughter knowing things that haven’t yet happened. Now that we’re in Ireland, I can only assume she’ll surprise us even more.”

“Mom, can we start a fire in the hearth? There’s just something so special about a fire on a damp rainy day. Besides, the lights will go out soon.”

Brian looked at his wife and murmured, “Not to mention the newly aged knowledge in her way of speaking. That’s very unsettling.”

Ian and Liz were finishing their tea and stood to walk across the road to their own house. “Brian, whenever you’re ready for a jaunt into town, let me know. I’ll ride with you. Our girls can use my car to do whatever they need to do.”

Morena checked the pantry and refrigerator. “I seem to have enough food for the next few days but I would still like to visit the market. I forgot to ask Finola where that might be.”

Mia heard the conversation and spoke, “Mom, as you approach town, stay on your left. You’ll come to a slight curve in the road. Take it and after about five minutes, you’ll see Rowan’s Market. There will be a small fresh fish market a few doors down. Mo deas should have some fresh fish.”

Brian looked at his wife and whispered, “Don’t even think of asking. I’ve given up trying to figure out how she knows all the things she knows.”

Liz looked at Ian and said, “We’d better hurry. The sky has gotten exceedingly dark. I’d like to get home before the rain begins. Come on, Mickey. We might need to run.”

Mia said, “Don’t worry, Aunt Liz. It won’t rain until you’re safe inside. Don’t forget to light a fire.”

Liz looked at Mia, startled at the girl’s proclamation but said their goodnights and ran across the road.

True to her declaration, the first raindrop didn’t fall until Ian closed the door to their new home.

“How does she do that?” he wondered aloud.

“Dad, I’m taking Mia’s advice and lighting a fire. There’s already wood in the fireplace.”

Liz looked around her new home and remarked, “You know Ian, your aunt thought of everything. A fireplace, gas stove, large refrigerator, double kitchen sinks and I bet the bathrooms have upgraded tubs and showers. You know, Ian, Finola’s right. I haven’t been here twenty-four hours and I’m beginning think of never leaving. Tomorrow, I think I’m going to speak with our Old Soul, Mia.”

Keep those chapters coming. I still think you should write some more 'spells' for POETS here on Vocal. Really liked them in your other story.
