Shadow in the Dark

When the lights turned off, Claire saw things. It started with a shadow, in the corner of her vision, hovering just between the end of the bed and the closet. Eventually, the shadow sharpened into features, a nose, a chin, and a pair of deep-set, glowing red eyes. She hid under the blanket, but she knew it was there.

Then, she saw them everywhere. The streets were full of undead, waiting to move on. Figures of horror with angry faces and a red glow.

It took her years to realize that the shadows were alive.

She was dead.
