See You Later Alligator

Under the screaming Meemies

Benji and I entered the water on the far side of the pond, knives between our teeth. Screaming Meemies crossed the sky.

We treaded. Benji, voice muffled: “Is your name really Brent?”

“Nah. Would another name suit you?”

“Its not me. If you’re killed, St. Peter might not have your papers. Your soul might get misplaced.

Me: “If we both get killed, you could straighten him out.”

“I might not be next in line.”

In the moonlight we saw an alligator’s head break the surface.

Benji raised his knife. “See you later…”

“Wait! I said.

“What?”

“Ask him his name.”
