Sea Devil
It has been months since any of us have seen land, it’s almost like the world has been swallowed by waters of the abyss. Many of us have fallen ill, and it seems that our calls for help, and prayers continue to go unanswered. The captain seems mad, proclaiming that “Just a bit further now boys, she’s waiting”. We had all signed up to be crew to him in England, he spoke of it being the voyage of a lifetime, being a man, a year abroad would set your family up with all they need, and with this many of us ran to the chance. Work was scarce during these times, people were going hungry, and to be offered a prize like this, it seemed too good to be true. First came the rats, they had spread illness amongst us before we even knew it, then came the shortages with more being ill, our medical supplies were at an all low, and food was beginning to run thin.
We pleaded with our captain to go off his course in search of land, but a blazing fire hid behind his eyes and he’d repeat our contracts back to us. I was beginning to think, was this all really worth it? At the same time however many of us had families at home, and those families' lives depended on us returning back with our pockets lined with gold. The days grew with bitterness, and the nights seemed to last decades. The waters begun to grow darker as we sailed on to unknown territories, something seemed wrong with the water, my gut clinched screaming at me, something terrible was going to happen. I sat on the deck clenching my stomach watching the night sky above us. We were all worn to the bone, and the captain stood peering over the side of the deck repeating to himself “She’s coming”, at this point I could care less and had grown used to his insane banters. Dark clouds started to roll in, they were unlike any storm clouds I had ever laid my eyes on.
Flashes of what looked like lightning started to pierce through the water's tides, as if something was underneath creating them.
I couldn’t tell if I was dreaming or not, I was so tired and hungry. Screams began to roar through the ship and I came back to reality, it wasn’t a dream. A creature with eyes like the sea, and a body that looked like an eel and snake pushed up through the waters creating waves that almost sent us overboard. The ship rocked and the captain laughed mercilessly saying “I’m here girl, I’m here!”. From it’s back wings like a sparrow emerged and a tune of lavender hissing purged down on us. Was this the devil of the sea? The hissing hummed like a whirlwind and it’s tail peeked up. it wrapped it’s slithery skin around the captain and held him up, “I missed you dear girl.” he yelled at it and reached his arms out like a mad man.
It’s form began to transcend into an angel-like figure of a woman with the tail of a snake. “I knew you’d return.”, it whispered to him. Then they fell into the waters clutching onto each other. Down and down they went, until we could see them no more. We were all at a loss, scared, and unknowing of what had happened. Within the captain's room we found a chest filled with enough riches to set us all up, we eventually made it to land, and all agreed to never repeat the things we saw. Sometimes, I look out to the waters and think of him. Sometimes I hear tales at the pub of a creature called Ink Anyamba, and all I can do is laugh to myself. For they will never know the true story.
I hope you enjoyed this horror short from my book "The Devil's Tales", as much as I've enjoyed telling this tale.
