In a small town, there lived a man named Jim. Every day, Jim would sit down somewhere that was quiet so that he could have some alone time to reflect on his thoughts. He would try and think of how his day was, but he would always find himself thinking of his past. Jim would remember how life was when he was a kid and think it was all pretty normal for a kid to grow up the way he did. This didn’t bother Jim. Then Jim would start thinking about his teenage years. Due to the black outs that tormented him every day, he couldn’t remember much, but what he could remember bothered him a lot. Jim remembered how he would always be fighting with everyone -- his family, friends, schoolmates, and anyone he came across. He remembered it getting so bad that he got kicked out of school and earned the nickname Crazy One.

The only problem was that Jim had no idea why he did what he had done, because after he would break out of his black outs, he would have no memory to defend himself. This would aggravate him and tended to lead to another black out. Jim could remember it getting so bad that the cops took him from his house and said that he was a danger to his family.

Jim would also think of all the mental hospitals that he was in and out of throughout his childhood. He never knew why he was in them. He just knew it felt like a second home, because he was in them so often. After thinking about this for a bit, he shook his head and stuffed all the emotions he felt deep inside.

“I can never ever tell anyone about this,” he told himself as he walked out the door and started walking down the street.

He always liked to stop at the cemetery that was down the street from him. He felt right at home in a place like this ever since he was young. He felt like the souls would listen and help him out, but unfortunately, not all of them wanted to help him out in a positive way and he knew it.

The next day, he went to his great grandmother and asked her, “Why can I talk to the dead?”

“My boy, some of us are born with gifts. God has a plan for us and you having gifts are all part of His plan,” she replied, without a single sign of hesitation in her voice.

He took in what his grandmother said with great thought. Ever since then, he would think of how much this made sense. He couldn’t help but think maybe the gifts are why he felt at home with the dead.

One day, Jim stopped by the cemetery like he would every day, but for since reason, something felt off. He felt this darkness building up inside. He looks up and sees this shadow staring back at him. He froze as it’s dark gaze cast up upon him as it started to speak in an echoing voice.

It told Jim, “I am part of you. Don’t keep me locked up anymore. I will find a way out.”

Then as quick as it appeared, it was gone. When he came to, all he could think about was what that shadow told him and how familiar it felt to hear it’s voice. He shook his head as if to clear his mind then proceeded with his day. He kept telling himself it was just his mind playing tricks on him. Any feelings he felt from the experience got locked up just like the rest.

A few years had passed now and Jim felt like everything was going great for him. He had got a good job, a place to live, and he even found a way to stop reflecting on the past. He was feeling like he was on top of the world.

One day, he was at work doing his routine when he heard someone say in a female voice, “Hello.”

He was caught off guard by this. Jim usually kept to himself and his coworkers hardly talked to him. Despite the shock, he responded, “Hello, my name is Jim.”

“Nice to meet you, Jim. My name is Jenny,” She replied.

They continued to talk for a bit about themselves then Jenny asked if he would like to go for coffee sometime. Jim smiled and agreed to the invite.

Later that night, they met up at the coffee shop down the street. They talked all night and they felt like they hit it off so they made a mutual agreement to make this a daily routine to meet up.

So every day, Jim and Jenny met at the same coffee shop after work and spent a lot of time together. This went on for weeks then one night Jim decided to take it to the next step.

“Would you like to go back to my place?” Jim asked Jenny.

She was so happy to hear this and told him, “I would love to.”

When they get to Jim’s house, they end up talking all night. He told her, “Sorry I kept you up all night. If you want to go, you can. I won’t keep you any longer.”

“Can I spend the night in the warmth of your arms?”

He replied, “I will keep you warm and safe until the day you die, my angel.”

They headed up to his bedroom door an unforgettable night of passion.

The next morning, they woke up looking into each other’s eyes. Jenny told passionately, “I had a great time last night.”

They both got dress for the day. As they were about to head off on their separate ways, Jim called out to her, “Same time?”

Jenny agreed and they went on their separate ways for the day.

The next day, work went by really fast. When Jim got out, he rushed to the coffee shop and looked for Jenny. When he didn’t see her, he thought to himself that she must still be at work and proceeded to the table that him and Jenny would always sit at. He waited three hours then the owner went up to him and said, “Sorry, I have to ask you to leave. It’s closing time.”

Jim left with his head down in disappointment. When he got home, he decided to give Jenny a call. When he did, all it did was ring and go to voicemail. This bothered him, but he refused to believe that Jenny would hurt him on purpose so he decided to try and sleep it off.

While Jim slept, he had a dream of the old cemetery he used to visit. He proceeded to walk in like he always would. When he got to the back, he found a grave that really took his breath away. The grave read, ’Here lies Jim. The man with a split soul’. Then a dark laughter filled the air and he could hear a dark voice say, “I can’t be locked away. I am you. Don’t deny me. You can’t deny me. Don’t let her break us apart. I won’t allow it ever!”

He woke up with a huge feeling of rage and fear inside him. He didn’t know what to do so he took a shot of whisky and went back to sleep.

The next day, Jim tried to meet up with Jenny at the coffee shop again and hoped she would be there. He looked around and she was still nowhere to be found. He sat down and waited while the rage and hurt built inside. Again the shop closes and Jenny was nowhere to be found.

He walked home and called her, trying to find out why she was doing this to him. He called and it rung a few times before someone picked up. Instead of saying hello, he heard heavy breathing. It sounded like at least two people to him and then he heard a familiar sound. It was the sound of Jenny moaning in a pleasurable way.

He hung up the phone and slammed it down. He felt himself losing control just like the old days. He decided to drown his feelings out with a few stiff drinks. As he did, he said, “This is what I get for falling in love. I am a fool. I should have known a beast like me could never find true love.”

Once he finished the bottle, he ended up passing out. While in this drunken slumber, he ended up having another dream. He returned to the grave in the back of the cemetery. This time, it was waiting for him.

It told him, “Don’t worry about a thing. I will take care of everything. All you have to do is let me out.”

“I set you free. Please set me free,” Jim replied.

“Your wish is my command,” the beast said as everything went black.

The next day, Jim woke up with a huge headache and a mixed bag of feelings. Startled, he looked at his hands and saw that they were full of blood. What had he done? He started checking himself for cuts, but he found none. Where did all this blood come from?

So he went the bathroom and washed his hands until they were free of blood. He looked in the mirror and instead of seeing his reflection he saw the beast from his dreams. He started at it in shock.

The beast stated, “I told you I would take care of it. We are one and we did what needed to be done. We are free now.”

When the beast stopped talking, the mirror shattered.

Terrified of what just happened, he started to clean up the mess with shaky hands. What just happened? Was this all real? Was he losing his mind?

Suddenly, he heard the phone start to ring as it startled him out of his state of terror and snapped him back into reality. He picked up the phone.

“Hello?”

The voice on the other end replied, “Is this Jim?”

“Yes. Why?”

They told him, “I have some bad news. Jenny is in the hospital. You need to come down right away.”

He replied with great concern, “Understood.”

He rushed to the hospital even after all the hurt she put him through. He still loved her and would never wish harm on her. When Jim got to the hospital, they directed him to Room 666. He thought it was fitting, considering the day he was having. He finally got there and entered the room. When he saw her, she was getting her dressing changed. He could see that she was unresponsive to the nurse and the wounds looked like they were scratches. When he got closer to her, he saw they matched the size of his fingers.

He freaked out and he ran out of the hospital to his car in distress. When he sat down in his car, he heard in his head, “I did this to her.”

That night, Jim called out to the beast-like shadow, “Come out and face me!”

Nothing happened so Jim went to bed. He had another dream that night. He was back in the cemetery again and he heard it yell out, “How dare you call me out?! I freed you! You owe me your life!”

As the shadow beast headed straight for him, he grabbed a cross that was sitting on the grave next to him. At that moment, he heard a voice that sounded like an angel telling him to use it on the beast. Just as it approached him, he thrust the cross into the heart of it. It screamed as it faded into the shadows.

The next day, Jim wakes to another phone call. It was Jenny’s family calling to let him know that she became responsive that morning and that they had moved her to Room 111. When Jim went there and walked in, Jenny was sitting up in her bed. She was so happy to see Jim. She gave him a big hug as Jim skewed her why she was missing in action.

“I am so sorry I couldn’t meet up with you! I had a family emergency come up and I left my phone at home so I couldn’t call,” Jenny replied.

“If that’s true then why it is when I called, I could hear moaning and heavy breathing. And it sounded like it was coming from two people?”

“Oh, that was my roommate and her boyfriend having ‘fun’. They said some guy named Jim was calling and their butts answered the phone. That made me laugh! Trust me, I needed it,” Jenny told him as she started to giggle a bit.

“That makes sense.” He let out a big sigh of relief and gave her a big hug.

When he did this, he noticed that the cuts had disappeared. He was overtaken with joy that he finally had done it. He beat the demon that had lived in him for so long. He made a vow to never let it out again.

Later that week, Jenny was released from the hospital. Jenny and Jim returned to their work and meeting up afterwards just like the good old times. They still remained friends up to this day and he never had to deal with the beast again. At least, he hoped not to anyway.
