Represented

Challenge story

By Muhammad AhmedPublished about a year ago 1 min read

It was also somewhere whilst watching the movie Moonlight that I had an epiphany regarding the issue of queer representation. The film in question is about a heterosexual black male gangster who comes to terms with his sexuality in spite of the pall that the society casts. The violence of the film was incredibly personal especially when recounting the age-old dilemma performance of the LGBTQIA+ community all the more in more hostile environments.

Moreover, what I found more appealing in the film was the identity matrix created whereby race, masculinity and sexuality cut across each other in a complex manner. Such concerns were depicted in the narrative of the protagonist Chiron, who limits his expression thanks to the expectations imposed by the society and gender. That particular moment arrays the emotional tenacity that simply sums up what the victim suffers most elation suppression and loneliness.

My perception was also altered showing that it is different experiences of queer life and not one that can be captured; all the variations are broad queer but divided in both cultures and races and individuals. I developed an understanding of how important it is to be 'fair' in how one represents queerness or issues regarding queerness in order to comprehend the many different difficulties that exist within jealous populations such as LgBT. It also reinforced how I understand that accepting someone is not the same as allowing their differences to exist, but rather that a space is created for them to be free as who they are.
