Remember

Another Life

Hello and thank you for reading this piece. I had many idea's and stories that I wrote that were longer than this one, but this just felt right. It is a part of a larger series I am putting together. If you enjoy fantasy, stories about spirits, mystery, and magick then please stay tuned, and once again thank you for reading this short piece.

I’ve had the same dream for the last nine years, but it never really felt like a dream. In it I had lived a rather normal life, or at least normal for that world. It wasn’t to different from my life here in the now, ordinary. On this day the clouds turned the sky grey and the cold breeze would make ones hairs stand up. Children on their way to school played with their breaths, ran towards or away from their friends and raced through alleys on their hover boards. Actual hover boards before being yelled at for acting reckless. It was a usual day here, and in general this was a happy place to live. Life was good, and I guess anyone's life would be good when its filled with such magic and wonder. This was my everyday life here and I was happy. This wonderful city was called Asyan, and I sat in one of the tallest buildings a old clock tower near the river that ran through the center of the city. Where most of our imported goods came in, it was my favorite view in the city.

Our technology that we referred to as magick was similar to your science, and what you would call magic was for us more along the lines of those spiritually awakened. I was spiritually awakened, and so were they. The sound of their footsteps echoed off the wooden floors though I always felt their presence a lot sooner. We all enjoyed the climb up here it was like a pre workout that got us excited for the day. It was always the same conversation about how we were excited for the mid-year exams, a test where we put the skills we’ve learned so far to the test. Our teachers would assess us, work with us on improving but we were always more focused on the rankings. It should have been a wonderful day, but then like always I’m suddenly in my living room receiving news of my father. I always have this feeling of dread in my stomach, but the announcement should be a happy one. My father wants to see me, but the thing is I never knew him and finding out he was the lord of the city could do that.

You see I knew it would change my life, and that I may have to part ways with those that I loved. Sure enough the news spread, and people began to put their distance between us. All except for those two, Aya and Oliver were two of my best friends. Olivers parents didn’t really mind and treated me the same which was comforting, but Aya’s parents weren’t exactly the same. Though they never voiced it openly we could easily tell how they felt about it. The end of the year seems to come quickly, and I am suddenly in my fathers manor training. The upper class was always expected to project power, and the thing about the lord that everyone knew was that though he wasn’t cruel he could be harsh. Scene’s begin to flash, I achieve power and then I’m in an arranged marriage. Typical, just another way to gain power. My father had many allies and people who wanted to be his friend, but as always you take the bad with the good. He had enemies as well, and similar to Earth war would break out.

The skies are black from fire, I seem to be hurt and there I am being laid down by my fiancé telling me I won’t die. My heart always feel heavy during this part because I’m pretty sure… I die. I always wake up, and somehow recall all of it like a memory, but this time is different. Before waking up there was a pale owl flying towards my direction and it feels so familiar.

‘Found you’.

A voice in my head speaks to me, and it sounded so familiar. Then I see her, my best friend standing but a few yards away from me, and then she’s gone. Suddenly the world goes still, nothing is moving as if time is paused and then I hear her voice again.

‘Remember’.

I get a splitting headache like someone is drilling in my head. I’m pretty sure I pass out because the next moment I’m waking up on a table in a ruined building in clothes that are not mine. I freaked out at first and went to check outside to find that the city, my city of Asyan was in ruins. I was living an ordinary life.. up till this point that is.
