QR Code Murders: Your Name
A possible witness surfaces.
“You don’t look like a Jergesen…” Yawquisha said, looking at Kim’s ringless ring finger.
“Marriage name. Stuck with me after the divorce.”
They rolled around Southbridge waiting for the studio session to end. Finally, Dick walked out of the studio.
“Mr. Dick!” Kim called before he went into a chunky SUV.
“Hey, lady. Don’t be callin’ my gov out like that. Call me 5G.”
“5G. Do you have a moment?”
He looked at his driver and the security detail. “Give me ten minutes.” He walked over to Kim and Yawquisha.
“You’ve got five minutes.”
“Are you familiar with these men?”
“Look, I don’t talk.”
“If you don’t talk, you’re going to be shot and killed like them. Now, it is time for you to give me the information.”
Dick looked around. “Okay. I knew Slim. I knew about the QR codes.”
“Who started the QR code killings?”
“I don’t know that! I’m just out here trying to get out of Delaware like everyone else under thirty.”
“How old are you now?
“Nineteen.”
“You won’t see twenty if you don’t start talking. What’s your number? We can keep this discreet. Matter fact just give me your favorite social media site and we’ll exchange messages if that will make you more comfortable,” Kim reasoned.
“Alright.” He stepped away from the car and moved towards the SUV. He hopped in and the red lights were like embers in the night.
“Is that what they teach you at detective school?” Yawquisha asked.
“It’s something like that.”
Then the SUV exploded like it hit an IED.
figures in black holding a rocket launcher fled from the scenes.
“Stay here!” Kim Screamed.
She grabbed her pistol and ran after the figures. They moved with the silence and agility of a ninja for toting such a large armament.
Kim was a rifle expert as a Marine but she always scored a “pizza box” with the pistol. That was the “Marksman” or lowest degree you could achieve on the range. As a detective, she still had trouble hitting black with her sidearm. She was reminded of this as she tracked down and let off two shots that hit nothing.
At the same time, Yawquisha put on her ski mask and provided commentary to the sirens and horns from the fire, paramedics, and police now on the scene.
Kim kept going. She wouldn’t stop. Her pursuit of her suspects provided her with a reason to make up for not protecting the rapper at the studio.
She finally got the one holding the launcher in her sights. She fired. Adrenaline coursed through her like gasoline through a high performance muscle car.
The figure dropped like a testicle. She ran over to him and kicked away the launcher. She looked over at him. He was still alive but fading fast. He twitched his last and perished.
“I need a van over at…112th Street in Southbridge.”
Yawquisha panned her smartphone. “This is the scene of Slim God 5G’s last place. That van on fire was his coffin. Wilmington suffers yet another L. The QR code murders continue as the rappers try to escape the tiny state to make a better life for themselves. If we—”
A knock on the window interrupted Yawuisha’s commentary. She would edit that later.
“This is Detective Jergensen’s vehicle, do you have any credentials?” Detective Zola asked.
Yawquisha flashed the paper declaring her a ride along. Zola read it. He nodded.
“Stay here!” Zola said. Yawquisha rolled her eyes. She pulled her phone out again. The battery was too low to record video so she snapped as many shots of the firemen and police and paramedics.
Kim was walking towards the car at this moment.
