A tear gas canister struck the side of the car. Kim gunned it. She cleared out of Wilmington and hit the I-95 overpass with speed.

“Where are you headed?” Tamil asked.

“We’re going to lay low for a few days. We can go to the store. I’ll buy clothes and toiletries and whatever else you need,” Kim looked into the rearview mirror at Yawquisha. The youth was tapping away on her screen.

“Got it. I’ll changeover,” Yawquisha replied.

“Once the citizens of the city slow down a bit, we’ll be able to return.”

The car barreled down the highway and the three of them reached Newark in a matter of twenty minutes. Yawquisha’s thumbs were printer’s presses. She typed up the entire document in a matter of ten minutes. Her ability to be a triple threat (audio, video, text) permitted her the chance to be the citizen journalist she always aspired to be.

Tamil turned around and saw that Yawquisha had not stopped tapping her screen. She was in the mini editing suite stitching together footage and blurring her image out of the videos.

“You’ve sure gotta work ethic,” Tamil pointed out.

“It’s one of my only codes of ethics,” Yawquisha responded.

“You take the time to do all that from the back of a police car. That’s impressive. Just by being prompt and dedicated, you’ve been able to achieve what few people your age ever even dream.”

“Thanks.”

Kim grinned. She pulled into a megastore that sold everything.

“Alright, you can go and do your thing. I would be offering you my card but I’m sure you have far more credits than I.”

“We may never know,” Yawquisha replied with a smirk. Yawquisha led the three of them into the store. They snapped up shirts, blouses, jeans, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and wipes and baggage and hair care products.

Yawquisha brandished her weapon: a credit card. She paid for all of their items. Everything that she charged came in the three figures.

The next stop was the hotel. Upon reaching the august sleep and eat, the trio trekked into the place. A fountain splashed water into a koi pond. Two glass pods dispensed lemon water and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies greeted them.

Yawquisha handled the rooming situation. Of course, she opted for a suite.

The concierge looked at her and wanted to place a name and face but failed to do so. She asked, “How long will you be enjoying your stay with us?”

“We’re going to be here for four days.”

They found their room and delighted in the amenities.

“You didn’t have to buy so much hair stuff,” Tamil pointed out.

“Yes, I did,” Yawquisha said with a flip of her hair. It was the first time Kim let out a belly laugh in days. She looked at both of them.

“Captain granted me a 96. It’s—”

“Four days. I kind of figured that out,” Yawuisha said.

“We’ll just be able to be away from the city and seek ways to make sure your home is monitored. We’ll send a few patrol cars over there every hour on the hour if it will make you feel safer.”

“Thanks.”

“We’ll of course see to it that the damage be taken care of. I know you can handle it but—”

“I’ll handle it. Thanks, again.”

Kim got serious. “Now, let’s air this out right now. You have to be on the same page as me at all times during this experience. It is important that we be in sync with what is going on outside.”

“I understand everything you said completely,” Yawquisha replied.
