“Do you believe in God?” Kim asked, that sly grin creeping on her face.

“No.” Yawquisha replied and didn’t breathe another word about it.

The idea dropped like a stone. Heaviness in the car soon lifted when they arrived at headquarters. Captain Framingham looked at the detective and the vlogger. It was a gaze that suggested respect and admiration.

“You’ve done it, Jergensen. Miss Hudlin. You both blew this case wide open. We’ve been getting calls, emails, text Tok Tiks….”

“Tik Tok,” Yawquisha corrected.

“Yes well, Rodman Patton has just been arrested on suspicion of running a criminal organization and the murder of four out of the eleven men with the codes. Great job, ladies.”

Kim and Yawquisha looked at each other.

“Thanks….” they said in unison.

The captain’s tone then shifted. Like a gear shaft slowing a hot rod down at a red light, the exuberance vanished and he took on the authority of his office.

“Like I’ve said, the police chief is riding me to get anyone else connected to these murders. Anyone at all. We have to start booking more suspects before the next vic drops.” There was a sternness in his voice. His timbre seemed to make the women tremble but not with fear. It was a return of the respect and admiration.

“Copy.” That was all Kim had to say. It sufficed. Yawquisha bowed slightly as if before royalty.

Kim swung around and Yawquisha whirled about as well. Framingham knew that he had addressed the issue and felt a pang knowing that he had to send Kim out into the snarls and snares. But he knew that she was prepared as a Leatherneck, as a cop.

“Do you believe in God?” Yawquisha asked.

“I did,” Kim admitted.

Again, the subject dropped like a coin that pinged and spun around and then settled.

Yawquisha prepared her microphone and her lenses. She used a solution that cleared her equipment of dust and tiny debris. She kept her tools in top condition and was game ready to tackle the various scenes she would shoot.

“Alright, we’re going into this side street. It’s been known to be gang infested. Some of them might talk once we get him or her alone,” Kim warned.

“Got it,” Yawquisha said.

They rolled out of the car and walked on the set. Some loiterers milled about playing dominos and sketching tattoos in their flesh.

“Why don't you get work done from Tall K?” Kim asked.

“He’s a snitch.”

“He got out of jail because he told on someone who actually committed a crime and got his record cleared. Seems like snitches get riches.”

Marion Harp snickered. “I guess you’re right.”

“You know I am. The same can happen to you if you just talk. let me know where Patton recruited for his record label.”

“I don’t because I don’t rap. I’m a gangster and gangsters don’t rap.”

“But you can talk. You can say the names of his underlings and we can bring the whole house down on his head.”

“I could. I might just say who these creeps are. They’re not gang gang. They don’t care about people’s families. See, this gang is all about people. It stresses unity and cohesiveness,” Harp said. Kim had a brief moment of deja vu ij the Marine Corps. She remembers her recruiter visiting neighborhoods just like this in search of warm bodies.

“That’s what I’m saying. Your input could be a bonus in our efforts to stop these killings. Whatever names you have will help,” Kim explained.

Harp looked about and said, “Alright I can say something.”
