“Go’s dead,” Kim said. It was a flat tone in her voice that was like a pick stuck in a chunk of ice.
Yawaquisha videoed the words coming from Kim’s lips. She ensured her hands remained steady. Everything that she spoke of was glacial: slow and frigid. “There’s a chance, a small chance, that we can glean some information from his closest associates,” Kim mentioned.
“What about Tall K?”
“What about him?”
“Shouldn’t he be protected? He wasn’t killed because of the QR code on his arm even though he snitched on Parton.”
“His informant status has been upgraded. Go didn’t have the same protection because someone is still out there worried about taking out rappers.”
Yawquisha processed all of the data and queried, “So what are you going to do about it?”
Kim shot a glance at the camera lens. “I’m going to fight.” She said it low and simply. There existed a sense of urgency and a yearning to see justice carried out by her hands, her mind.
The battery level was getting low so Yawquisha placed the pack on the portable charger. She set down her weapon of choice to battle injustice. She looked at Kim.
“Once we meet up with these individuals, will we be able to understand the importance of the amount of work that you will be doing? What will the feds be doing?”
“I’ll answer the first question. St. Kitts and Darby are assigned to the same cases I work. They’ll be the ones to ascertain the legitimacy of the information I collect. The importance of the work will depend on how much we can take from them. Their gestures, facial movements, how they scratch their heads will all be factored into how much we may know,” Kim expounded.
With the knowledge of how they would proceed with the work of the federal agents, Yawquisha better saw the relationship that seemed strained in the past. For all the time that Kim had spent with them, there just appeared to be a rift. Yawquisha looked back on some content recorded on her phone. She picked up on the dismissiveness of the agents at first and how they began to respect Kim and her work.
“If I had a choice to work with the FBI or not, I would. Just as I was going to be one of the agents after training, I would have been assigned to some place in west bumba—a place probably in Ouray, Utah. Really beautiful but truly remote. So, I respect them both. They’re doing their jobs. I acknowledge that.”
The battery was just about fully charged. Yawquisha snatched it off the charger. She applied it to the camera and tightened up on the microphone.
“Now that you have seen the number of victims slightly spike despite Parton being locked up, what can you say about the amount of bodies that continue to stack in relation to these murders?”
Kim took the question and it almost made her collapse on herself. She was bereft of all vigor and was running on the fumes of coffee and energy drinks. She chewed on nicotine gum even though she never smoked cigarettes. The query hung in the air.
“Of course. These killings continue because there is an envious force that doesn’t want to see people win. It is a cancerous, vicious thing to consider but there are factions out there who know nothing but the end of the gun,” Kim declared.
Yawquisha kept her head up and focused on Kim. She absorbed the words that the detective spoke. The iciness thawed a bit as she talked about the various ways that evil infiltrated the streets.
