He knew it would come. She talked about it. She stroked his fur, tears falling down her face.

“I wish you understood,” she would say, but he did.

“Let me take her place when it happens,” he would ask every night. Then, the day came.

She walked to her bedroom. He followed behind her, watching. He waited until he heard the chair fall.

The rope snapped. He ran to her body. He licked the tears from her face. In a blink, everything changed.

Her eyes widened as she looked down at her face smiling back at her.

“It worked.”
