Nuwa Patching the Sky
Nuwa Patching the Sky: The Ancient Chinese Myth of How the Goddess Saved Humanity

In ancient times, a thunderous rumble suddenly shook the heavens and the earth. For some unknown reason, the four towering pillars that held up the sky began to crack with loud “kacha kacha” sounds, as if they could no longer bear the weight of the ages. With a deafening crash, they collapsed. In an instant, half of the sky caved in like shattered glass. A huge black hole gaped in the azure sky, resembling a ferocious beast opening its enormous maw, revealing its dark, bottomless interior and exuding a terrifying aura.
At the same time, the land of Jiuzhou trembled violently. Deep, bottomless cracks split open across the ground, breaking the once whole land into pieces, like tattered rags torn to shreds. The sky could no longer cover the earth as perfectly as before, and the earth struggled to bear all things. Surging floods gushed out from the cracks in the ground like unruly wild horses, rampaging across the land and turning everything into a vast ocean. Flames blazed everywhere, the towering infernos turning the sky scarlet. Billowing smoke blotted out the sun, plunging the whole world into darkness and chaos.
Deep in the forests, ferocious beasts, startled by this sudden catastrophe, rushed out of their lairs. Their eyes gleamed with savagery, and their sharp fangs were bared. They prowled around, hunting for prey, and countless innocent people became their victims. In the sky, eagles and vultures circled amidst the smoke and flames. With their sharp eyes fixed on the old and the young on the ground, they swooped down mercilessly, tearing at their flesh and blood. The cries of agony, screams, and roars of beasts intertwined, echoing over the broken land, sending chills down everyone’s spine.
Goddess Nuwa, looking down upon the world, was heartbroken to see the children she had created suffering in this great disaster. Her eyes filled with pain and compassion, and tears rolled down her cheeks involuntarily. “I can’t just stand by and watch my children suffer!” Nuwa clenched her fists firmly, determined to patch the black hole in the sky and rescue her children from the dire straits.
Nuwa resolutely embarked on the arduous journey to save the world. She traveled through mountains and rivers, enduring countless hardships, and finally reached the majestic Kunlun Mountains. The mountains were shrouded in clouds and mist, exuding an air of mystery and solemnity. On the mountaintop, Nuwa set up her formation, unleashed her divine power, and personally collected multicolored stones. She built a furnace and began smelting them. Flames roared in the furnace, and Nuwa stayed by its side day and night, concentrating intently on controlling the heat. Her sweat dripped constantly, soaking her clothes, which were then dried by the flames, but she never stopped her work. After a long time, the multicolored stones were finally smelted into a dazzling, iridescent slurry.
Nuwa held up the slurry and flew vigorously towards the black hole in the sky. She filled the huge hole bit by bit, using all her strength with every wave of her arm. The slurry obeyed her commands, gradually filling the black hole as she worked. Through unremitting efforts, the sky was finally repaired. The sky regained its former azure hue, and sunlight once again bathed the earth.
However, Nuwa knew that this was not enough. She saw that the earth was still shaky and the sky seemed on the verge of collapsing again. So, Nuwa turned her gaze to the vast ocean. She found an enormous turtle that had lived in the sea for countless years and possessed great power. With a heavy heart, Nuwa cut off the turtle’s four legs, which were incredibly thick and emanated a mysterious glow. She placed the four legs at the four corners of the earth, replacing the broken pillars and propping up the entire sky. The sky became stable, no longer swaying precariously.
Just as Nuwa brought a glimmer of hope to the people, a menacing black dragon emerged. It rampaged through the Central Plains, making the floods even more ferocious and deepening the people’s suffering. Without hesitation, Nuwa charged towards the black dragon, engaging in a thrilling battle. The dragon was huge and immensely powerful. The black mist it exhaled blotted out the sky, and the floods it spat out submerged villages. But Nuwa was fearless. Relying on her wisdom and divine power, she fought the dragon to the death. After a fierce battle, Nuwa finally slew the black dragon. The people of the Central Plains cheered with joy, knowing that one more danger had been eliminated.
After dealing with the black dragon, Nuwa turned her attention to the raging floods. She gathered a large amount of reeds, burned them into ashes, and piled them up. Miraculously, these reed ashes had the power to hold back the floods. With Nuwa’s actions, they formed a solid wall, blocking the floods. Gradually, the floods receded, revealing the land that had been submerged.
Through these arduous efforts, the sky was mended, the four corners of the earth were stabilized, the floods subsided, the ferocious beasts and birds were vanquished, and the disasters in the Central Plains finally came to an end. The sun once again shone warmly on the earth, birds sang merrily in the sky, and people emerged from their shelters, reigniting the spark of hope for life. The kind-hearted people were saved and resumed their carefree lives. They would always remember Nuwa’s kindness and pass down her story from generation to generation. Nuwa was not only the great mother of humanity but also a heroic savior. Her deeds became an eternal legend, shining brightly over the land of China.
