Just another regular day walking home from work, not really thinking about anything just random thoughts. I was actually wondering what Sarah was making for dinner, she loved to cook and always loved trying new recipes. Anyways I walked down the same alley I always do and then, I heard it. It was very low and distant at first but it grew louder as the seconds creeped by. That sound that would haunt and traumatize me for nights to come. The only time I can say I regretted making those selfless decision, an act of kindness.
I heard the sound of two babies crying, coming from a dumpster in the same alley I always take to get home. As I get closer to the dumpster the cries started to die down as if the babies knew someone was getting closer. I slowly grasp the edge of the dumpster to lean in and look inside. There was nothing there. It shook me and made me feel very unsettlingly. I know what I heard but there was nothing there. I felt distraught and nauseous, confused I hurried home.
After getting out the shower I wipe the fog from the mirror and stared at myself still remembering the sound of those babies crying. The unnerving part was it sounded as if I could hear those cries from somewhere near. I shake my head and tell myself I’ve been putting long hours at work, I need to relax. So I go downstairs and sit down for dinner and Sarah asks me the usual questions, How was my day?, How many sales did I make?, etc we go through the whole routine. We are finally both sitting down eating our dinner, quiet and with a strange vibe in the room Sarah says, “ something strange happened to me today”. I look up at her curiously, nervously I giggled out, “what?" She answers by explaining how she was walking by this old ladies house that was having a yard sale. This old lady had a specific set of antique baby clothes that she couldn’t stop looking at. She went on explaining how she was going to purchase the set since it was obviously meant for twins but decided not to because it was silly. The next part Sarah got to explaining, sent chills down my spine, it made me realize that what I heard wasn’t a coincidence and made me very uneasy. Sarah hesitantly explains how the old lady was mumbling something under her breath. Then when she started leaving she said out loud, “be careful what you wish for, many blessings come from different lords”. Sarah starred at me for a while with wide eyes, wanting to say something but looked scared to say it. So I started telling her how I heard crying babies down the alley. But before I could say it she cut me off almost screaming, “crying babies”!! We both froze in silence. Just when I was going to add to the conversation we heard two heavy knocks at the door, sounded more like thuds. We looked at each other both just stuck scared of what we just heard. I slowly stood up and made my way to the door. Sarah tried telling me something but seemed to petrified to say a single word. I was literally three steps away from the door knob when another two thuds rang loud through our house. I yelled out, " who's there?" hoping for a reply but i received none. I turn the knob slowly, placing my left hand on the door to put pressure on it incase someone tries to rush in. Having the door cracked open a little I peered through the crack to see who I would encounter but instead two high pitched cries greeted me which made this night even more stranger than the day Sarah and I had.
