Not a morning person
A no-nonsense prison officer is faced with verbal abuse from a prisoner and tackles it his own way

07:45 Radio squawks: “All units, unlock for activities!”
My mate heads off to cell 5-01, as I head for 5-50, working around the landing to meet in the middle.
Reading the list, I unlock 5-50, 5-48, 5-47, with a: “Time for work, lads,” or “Morning gents, education.”
5-38: “Workshops, gents!”
“Fuck off!”
“What?”
“Fuck off and shut the door.”
“Okay, let’s try this again. Morning Mr Bradley, breakfast is served, and your workshop instructor awaits your convenience.”
He laughs. “Okay guv, sorry I swore at you. Good morning and thanks.”
“You’re welcome, Bradley,” I chuckle, turning to the next door.

I love the mix of tension and humour in that short exchange with Bradley.
Thanks for sharing this in the Vocal + Assist group. I wouldn't have seen it otherwise, and I love short stories that rely so heavily on dialogue.
