No Rest for the Heroes
A comedic bit of superheroes who can't catch a break
Brother and sister, Nina and Jeremy, unpacked the final box of their belongings and stood in admiration of of their new house. Mostly, the many pictures of their numerous adventures lining the wall.
"I still can't believe you took down Thundering Rhino by yourself"! Jeremy exclaimed. Eyeing the picture of his sister fighting a large bipedal rhino.
"You could have helped, you know"! Nina retorted, mounting more pictures on the wall beside the rest.
"I think you had it covered just fine on your own! That grey skinned brute had no idea what hit him"!
"Ha ha. Keep that in mind the next time your up against a big baddie and I don't feel like helping you"!
The two shared a laugh and continued to reminisce about old battles and funny misadventures in their past for the next twenty minutes.
"Yeah, those were great times". Nina sighed in contentment. She then turned and looked at Jeremy. "Do you miss it"?
"A little. It feels nice to be in retirement and out of the big city, though. I'm just glad nothing ever happens in small towns like....".
Before Jeremy could finish, a large truck tire crashed through the adjacent window. The duo jumped apart and stared out of the shattered opening with shocked expressions.
A large robotic man stomped its' way through the small suburban town. Kicking cars and trucks like they were soccer balls. At one point, it picked up a light pole and threw it like a spear in the siblings' front lawn.
Nina and Jeremy watched the scene unfold with annoyed faces. Rolling their eyes, they retrieved their uniforms from the hall closet, changed, then trudged out the front door.
"You had to say it out loud, didn't you"?
"Yeah, yeah. I know it".
The two sauntered up the road, keeping the colossal robot in the corner of their vision. A particularly hard kick sent a large pickup truck flying the the siblings' direction. Like an organized colony of ants, they split apart as the soaring vehicle drew closer to them. It crashed and broke apart on the cold concrete. Jeremy rejoined Nina as they rounded the street's corner. Now standing mere yards away from the mechanical tyrant.
"Yo, bud"! Jeremy called loudly. Garnering the giants attention. "You can't just go stomping through a small town and destroy whatever ya like"!
"It gets pretty taxing if you catch my drift", Nina finished casually.
The robotic man stared down at the superheroes with no expression. Its' man-made human face looked right through them. The duo exchanged an uneasy look, then returned their attention just in time to see the robot's bulky arm turn into canon. It fired a single round, making Nina and Jeremy jump apart. The force of the shot sent the siblings gliding onto the roofs of the adjacent houses.
Satisfied, the metal man put its' canon away and turned away. Nina adjusted the mask on her eyes, while Jeremy flung his cape off of his head. Thew stumbled to their feet, the force of the blast and the uneven texture of the roofs thy were on made standing a near impossible task. They glared after the retreating villain. Nina huffed in annoyance and began to levitate off the roof.
"You ready to take this joker down"? She asked.
Jeremy hopped down from the roof he was on and effortlessly picked up a minivan with his bare hands. "Is that even a necessary question"?
With a grunt, Jeremy flung the car directly at the robot's head. It stumbled forward before whipping around to face the heroes with glowing red eyes. They only smirked as the fight of their superhero career began.
