Today was Neddie’s wedding day, the first day of the year. Pa had arranged for a marriage for her with the Hanson boy, whose family had offered a cow with two calves as part of the small dowry they were able to pay. The Hanson boy was good-looking, about three years younger than she was, and half her height.
She didn’t want to marry the Hanson boy; she wanted to marry Tomas Black, the town blacksmith who was now widowed twice. She was bound and determined to become the last of his wives.
So, she decided there was only one thing to do: to elope. Neddie planned every detail down to when she would leave. She discussed her plans with her sister, Lollie. She prepared the herbs she would need for her potions of love. Then came the big day.
She dressed in her wedding dress and put on her cloak. She gathered her things into a bundle and left for the blacksmith’s abode. Today, she would finally have her dreams come true.
On her way out the door, her sister whispered, “Aren’t you scared of the curse?”
Neddie just smiled and shook her head. She wasn’t afraid of the curse, for she was the curse. It was her poison that had killed his first two wives. That’s how she knew she would be the last one.
