A Story

Nikola was tired of being Jackson’s fool. She was tired of believing his lies. She’d had enough. So, she planned on doing something about it.

Nikola knew her husband was having an affair; she hadn’t been able to prove it till now. She’d hired a private investigator to tail him for the last two weeks, and now she had the proof. The investigator had picture after picture of her husband going out with Nikola’s best friend, and a few of those pictures were very incriminating.

So Nikola pulled out her prenup agreement, so glad her father had tricked Jackson into signing the papers before he could read the fine print. She read that fine print then and got tickled to death with what it meant. For there, in small letters, was Jackson’s doom.

So, Nikola took the prenup papers to her lawyer and, smiling, told him how she wanted things to go down. Then she went home and waited for her husband to come in. She planned everything down to what she would wear for this encounter. She didn’t see the lawyer picking up his phone to make a call as she left.

When he arrived, she calmly handed him the pictures. Then she informed him that she wanted a no-contest divorce, according to the prenup. Then, she gave him the divorce papers for him to sign. He looked them over and looked her square in the eye.

“I’ll be damn if you get all my stock! Let alone both houses! You must be crazy to think I’d not put up a fight. ” With that outburst, Jackson got up and turned the lights off and on twice.

As soon as the lights came on, three men burst through the front door, armed with guns. One of the guys shot Jackson in the left shoulder.

“I know that hurts, but you want this to look real, don’t you!” the man yelled as he turned and shot Nikola in the face.

The other two men were busy taking valuables out of the house. The last thing Nikola saw was her soon-to-be ex-husband smirking at her from where he leaned as he said, “So naive, Nikola, always so trusting. See where that has gotten you. Betrayed by your lawyer.”

Oh my, that took and unexpected turn. Well done.

  • Poor Nikola. I feel so sorry for her. It hurts the most when someone we trust stabs us in the back. I hate that lawyer! Awesome story!

  • This makes me think of "Rustler's Rhapsody" where the good guy ('cause he wears a white hat) hired by the bad guys to face down the real good guy reveals that he's not a good guy by shooting the real good guy not in the hand & responds to the good guy's statement, "You're not a good guy," with "I'm a lawyer." How's that for a run-on synopsis of a sentence? Well done, Mother.
